390 issue???

Hmmmm, I finally got the blower motor put back in car and all hooked up....at last. So I go to fire it up yesterday and I still have a MAJOR oil problem . I fired it up, watched the fresh paint burn off the cast iron headers and the like. No oil problems? wrong! I take a quick look underneath and notice a small puddle growing at rear of motor .
It has a nice, steady drip as long as motor is running! I know it's not the pan or valve covers this time. It's coming from slots in front plate of bellhousing....drip.......drip..........drip...... ......drip

The only thing I can think is it's a oil galley plug that is seeping? The rear seal was pretty dry when I pulled it apart(though everything was soaked when I first looked). With it running out this fast I would say oil galley. Soooooo, looks like I pull tranny and flywheel and take another look while it's still pretty dry back there. At least then I might actually see where the oil is coming from. I've never had this kind of problem before. I use hardening sealer and really put a crank on the plugs(they are screw-in type).

So I guess this week I need to take a look. Just can't stand to have this thing puke oil like that!

ahhhhh,,,,,,,does it ever end? (well, the top end is dry now)

From what you are have said, I would suspect the rear main seal got torn somehow.

If you pull the trans and flywheel out and leave the engine in the car, try pulling the dizzy out and have a frind turn the oil pump while you watch under the car to see were it comes from. Just don't let it pour into your face.

Well, just got done pulling tranny/flywheel and found nothing unusual. Looks like the rear plugs aren't the issue? I tried running engine using 3/4" drill on blower snout and can spin motor slowly, but I don't think fast enough to make it drip. Might have to pull blower to side and spin dizzy(just didn't try tonight).

Russ, went racing most all weekend, but I was off Mon/Tues and figured I would get it running. It doesn't look good. Might have to pull it and pull crank out? Geez! Not that I have a "LIFE" or anything but I sure don't feel like screwing with it right now. Don't have much choice now, huh? It's half apart now, can't drive it! Don't know why it tore seal?? Never had that happen, never!!! I'll have to get real amibitious and get wrenchin'

MY 390 was leaking pretty good. I pulled the motor and redid all the low end seals and got all new bearings while I was in there. Put the motor back in and still leaked. I broke down and brought it to an FE guy I was told about. A couple days later I got it back and he had to replace all the gally plugs. He said they were not available but used some good ones from a spare block he had. I never took the flywheel off. Oh well, it was my first time attacking an FE.

I know I didn't need to tell you this cause you seem pretty knowledgable on the FE from what I have read. Just thought I'd give you my experience.

Larry take a deep breathe and cuss. that always makes me feel better.

I might have a little leak on my rebuild 390. but then again i probly need to go around to all the oil pan bolts and valve cover and all of those to check the trq on those things.

I still need to get it tuned up and take it out on the street for a good long run. I just need a big pay check to fill up the tank to do it.

Well I tried replying earlier, but the site locked up and I lost the wholeeeee post So, I try again....

I figured out the leak in the 390!!! It was NOT the rear seal after all(whew! )
It seems that the lower galley plug does not tighten down enough to seal tight(1/4" threaded pipe plugs). Seems the hole is threaded too deep and the plug goes too deep and tries to seal off the rear main galley . This is not good. Once I got the blower moved over, I used a drill on a stripped down dizzy to spin the oil pump and watch the oil seep from the plug.

On another note: I got my new steering box installed yesterday evening, a new rag joint today finished the project. I now have ALL new power steering components(at a grand total of $360 ).

After getting this major leak all fixed up and degreased the frame/undercarriage I decided to fix the valve cover leaks too. After pulling the covers I also decided to install some restrictors under the rockers. This was in hopes to cut down the oil in the heads(thus less leakage and maybe less down the valve stems-since the seals dissappeared many years ago). So tomorrow at work I'll see if it leaves any puddles.

Life is good again! The only thing I did notice is how hard the steering is now. Guess this is typical for a new set up? It's power, but seems stiff. It used to be really light, but now it feels "heavy". Hope this changes....but then again if it doesn't leak I'm not complaining.

Larry I think your getting OLD Like me!! LOL...the guy with NO power brakes and NO power steering...and now you have power...whats next? an auto ? from Mr. Stick!! Airconditioning? Plush carpet and electric windows? Power Seats and Mirror's ? JK!! Bud..

Glad to hear ya got the Oil leak fixed and put some restrictors in the top end..

and I dont know why your Power steering should be stiff..unless the lash wasnt set right at the rebuilder..Cause I changed mine about 10 years ago..and you can steer it with your pinky... I cant remember if when I bought mine ..if there were different ratio's or not? Sure ya have fluid in the pump?? LOL.. Did ya also put a power steering cooler on it? Dony know if ya need one on that light off truck...But I might have a spare in the shed if you need one??

Glad ya got er done!!

It was power, but it blew its guts on Friday so I had to replace it. I left the Exxon Valdex spot in the parking lot at lunch!!
I over filled it for the trip home, which is 18 miles thru town and it make it just to driveway before it started to get stiff and not want to work.

The "power" works, but it's just heavy feeling. You can steer it with a pinky, but not like before. I thought about the lash and might play with it? The output shaft looked to be new in this(not just a cheap rebuild) so might be a bit tight. The old unit was very used(but it was a reman unit too). All in all it feels like non power when you go to move the wheel, but like power it turns the wheels while sitting still very easily. Guess I need to get used to it.

No cooler on it...no need really. Thanks for the offer.

BTW, my '67 DOES have a/c and carpet!! The only bad part was last week the drivers window gave up too. Seems the regulator gear is about totally stripped(was not well when I bought truck) and is now useless. Have to pull window up half way . Got a fellow out west sending me a nice used piece...just have to wait now.

Bummer.....some people see this stuff as just "trucks" LMAO!!! The nerve of them...LOL!!!

I also found that the cab mounts are going south quick on '67. Definitely need to address this before winter. Don't want to have to tear into it while the snow flies...cause I won't have anything else available to drive. Time to order up some sheetmetal parts!

My plan was to get 3-4 yrs out of this truck(which it's on third year now) so I can't complain. I've tried to keep it up the best I can for a daily driver. The bed is still perfect, but the cab mounts are something you can't do much about til they are gone!
