Geo Metro charging problems

Well with the gas prices going through the roof I bought a bowtie in the form of a geo metro. Its a 92 model with the 1.0 3 cyl engine. Cant beat its 50mpg though. Only problem is that it isnt charging the battery. And it has an external voltage regulator. Some one said that I should be able to jump across the regulator to see if the problem is the regulator or the alternator but I dont have a clue how to. There are only 3 wires on the alternator the main lead and two wires on a single plug, a white with red stripe and a black wire. With an alternator costing $120 and the voltage regulator at $35 I want to be sure what the problem is before I go replacing stuff. Also does anyone know of a good forum for geo metro? Thanks for any help.

You could just pull the alternator and have it tested, as well as the regulator. Most parts places can test the alternator, and possibly the regulator. I use a local guy that rebuilds alternators and he can test both.
