Every few weeks or days (random) the fluid level drops on the master cylinder. Sometimes I am stopped at a light with the clutch in, the light turns green, I let the clutch out like I normally do and it stalls. Problem is the clutch grabs like 2" from the floor when the fluid drops. I fill it up and everything is ok for a few days. No visible fluid on the ground, under the hood, under the truck looking up, etc. I had a mechanic check it out (like always when the problem isn't occuring) and he found nothing wrong. I can fix a lot of mechanical/electrical problems on the truck myself- when it comes to internal engine/ clutch I have limited knowledge. If anyone has had or has heard of this mysterious disappearing fluid please let me know. Thanks.
This is a fairly common problem. Most likley the slave cylinder on the clutch. It requires dropping the tranny to change. Since you have to drop the tranny anyway you might as well go ahead and put a new clutch in as well. The slave cylinder is one of those things that you will probably want to go ahead and pay the extra bucks and get it from Ford. I have not had really good luck with an aftermarket one. I had mine changed about 3 years ago and ended up changing it myself this spring due to another slave cylinder failure. The original ford cylinder lasted 13 years....
Thanks bro. Any good service manuals you would recommend? Never dropped a trans b4. I know I could do it with yelling, screaming, kicking and swearing involved. After the 1st time though the 2nd is cake. Just figured I could read up some and prepare myself instead of winding up doing it the wrong way- making more work for myself. The old trail and error....
A couple of years ago I replaced the slave cylinder in my 90 using just a Haynes manual. It seemed to be adequate enough. I also replaced the clutch, release bearing, pressure plate as well as the slave cylinder. You might as well too, as long as you've gone to all that work to get there. I muscled the tranny down myself using a small floor jack with the truck in the driveway. I had to enlist help to put it back up. For safety's sake, I would get help next time getting the tranny down. Not too bad of a task...take your time and be careful.
check under the carpet in the cab, the master will cause the same problems you describe, but it can leak into the cab and you may not notice if not looking for it.

Sounds like clutch fluid is leaking at the slave cylinder inside the bellhousing. It will leave slight traces of fluid where the bellhousing bolts to the engine. That is about the only place you can lose fluid and not find a definite visible leak. Replacing the slave cylinder requires pulling the transmission.
