f-150 weight
Let's take for example the "payload" package comparison, between the old "7700 GVWR" package (03 and earler models) to the new payload package (8200 GVWR).
At first glance, you would think that the new F150 is head and shoulders above the old. However this is not so, when you look at the numbers.
Granted this is not a really straight up comparison, because the old 7700 GVWR package was only available with a supercab with a shortbed (or regular cab), while the new payload package is only available with an 8 foot bed (extended and regular cab), and not available with the shortbed supercab. However, this is Ford's marketing decision, and not really our concern.
Let's take supercabs for example, as a common denominator.
The old style (03 and earlier F150) had the following available for supercabs for the 7700 GVWR package:
4x4 - Curb weight 5030 - payload 2670 lbs.
4x2 - Curb weight 4686 - payload 3010 lbs.
The new redesign (as per 06 spec sheets) had the following numbers for supercabs with the 8200 GVWR package:
4x4 - Curb weight 5849 - payload 2290 lbs.
4x2 - Curb weight 5501 - payload 2640 lbs.
Weight difference - roughly 800 lbs, with a 400 lbs CUT in payload.
Now, granted, this is not exactly a fair comparison, because the new payload package is only available with an 8 foot bed, so you could probably shave off 200 lbs for the extra 2 feet of bed, but....still, it seems like as technology advances and gets better, trucks should be able to carry MORE, not less. Also, the weight of the F150 '04 redesign is, in my opinion only, a bit over the top.
Some of the weight comes from significant safety improvements, which are really quite nice. However, Ford STILL does not even offer the option of side curtain airbags. In addition, all this weight is making a really fine engine, the 5.4 liter V8, really seem underpowered.
Compare that with my prior truck which was a 1989 F-250 SC 8' bed, 4x4, 7.3l diesel which had a weight of about 6600 pounds at the dump scale and an 8800 gvw, and the new f-150 has almost the same capacity.
