internal/external balance
Internally or externally balanced refers to where the mtr rotating assembly has been balanced when the mtr was designed. An internally balanced mtr has all of its balancing done inside of the block, usually all on the crankshaft. An externally balanced mtr has some of its balancing done on the inside but also has more balancing performed on the outside of the block. On the externally balanced mtr this is usually means that the flywheel/flexplate has some sort of weight welded on it. The inteernally balanced mtrs have what is called a zero balance flywheel/flexplate (no weight). Also on the externally balanced mtr, some will have a counterweight outside of the mtr on the cranksaft nose right behind the harmonic balancer, or the harmonic balancer will have a large weight cast right into it on one side. When building a mtr you must be very sure you are using the proper parts or you could end up with a nasty vibration. Also when interchanging parts make sure they all fit in the block.IE externally balanced 460 crank will not fit into an early internally balanced block.
