86 Bronco timing

What is the spout connector on an 86 Bronco with the 302 engine? I'm trying to help my brother adjust his timing and the tag on the radiator says to "disconnect the spout connector" and then "set timing to 10 degrees BTDC". Can someone tell me what and where this electrical connection is?

Thanks,

Scott

The spout connector is an inline connector (electronic "wire" plug) that is located right next to the base of the distributor. It should be a single wire.

On my 1993 w/302 the SPOUT connector is located just below the left side (thats the drivers side if your in the USA, or the right side if your standing in front of the truck looking at the engine bay) hood hinge.....right next to the ECU and ABS TEST ports....like almost at the fire wall.

SPOUT is a acronym for something.....but I just cant remember what this early in the AM

SPOUT = SPark OUTput shorting jumper. On a truck of that vintage its going to be somewhere in the vicinity of the TFI (ignition module) mounted to the side of the distributor casting. Its a small grey "plug" with two wires of the same color (YEL/LT. GRN in this case I believe. Later models were PNK) extending from it. Removing it removes "SPark OUTput" signal from the EEC computer. (Its like removing the vacuum advance line on an older distributor). With the SPOUT signal interrupted, the engine will run at "base timing" which is set by the position of the distributor. Releasing the disty. clamp and turning the disty. will adjust the timing up or down. With a timing light you can make certain the "base timing" is 10 degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center).

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: The engine MUST be warmed up to operating temperature with the SPOUT connector in place BEFORE you shut the engine off and remove the connector. Not warming the engine ahead of time will cause nothing but headaches because everything changes as the engine warms up.
