bought a 64 short box in Feb. the hood it raised at the cowl and I can't seem to get it down. everyhinge is lowered as far as possible. Is it the springs? do I need to adjust the front? thanks
It's the hinges, most likely. They aren't collapsing fully, often due to the rivets getting worn.
Some have been able to pound the rivets and make them work. I haven't tried it.
There is at least one vendor in Hemmings advertising rebuilding of hood hinges. Might be worth a look.
You're not alone; mine sticks up at the back too.
Either find a bud witha hydraulic press or take 'em to a machine shop and have the pins pressed. I've banged 'em in with an impact generator(hammer, whacking stick, etc.)bu the hyd press (at least 2 ton) works best. They'll last for years after that.
One cool trick is since you have 'em off, media blast them before you press, then prime and paint while they're off. Make sure to stretch the springs before you paint 'em.
I'd heard that it was fairly common for the hood
latches to pop while driving and bend the hinge
attachment or the hinges themselves? Not sure
if this is true or not by my hood rides up at the
back as well, and it looks like someone tried to
"fix" it at one point by beating on the attachment
sheet metal with a ballpeen hammer.....
These hoods pop open quite frequently! For that reason I always be sure the safety latch is present and working. I currently have two trucks with this problem.
I had the same problem and messed with the hinges for days thinking they were the culprit I put a different hood on a few weeks ago and it sit perfect. I took a closer look at the old hood and the back of the reinforced part where it bolts to the hinges was collapsed. I couldn't see it with the hood on the truck. I guess if that rail is tweeked at all it will lift the rear of the hood.
