Ray, do you have a fuel source located? I can tell you that you fuel is critical and you will need connections to get it.

My brother works for Shelter Insurance and they had a devil of a time getting fuel. The company just bought a 500 gallon tank and has it available for their fleet down there.

He was working out of Mississippi.

There are no shelters, food, fuels, water, ect. down there so be prepared to take what your going to need just for yourself to survive while your there.

Let me start by saying that I salute you for your willingness to render aid to those that need it. Now for the cold hard facts. If you head to N.O. you should plan on being self sustained for the duration of your trip. Take all the gas, food, and water that you can carry and don't count on finding any of those things on the way. Sadly once you get there you will probably be told that you can't help anyway. There are already hundreds of people in place that can opperate equipment. The problem is that they need equipment to opperate. It will be at least another month before the levies are repaired and N.O. is drained. Probably more like three months. If I were you I would contact FEMA and find out for sure that you could be of help before you trek down there. Odds are they will tell you to just send money to the Red Cross or something.

United States Fire Administration along with FEMA has asked that career and volunteer Firefighters answer the call to help out also. Just got my paper work done and ready to turn in. Have to go to Atlanta, Ga. for training then get deployed from there. I could end up anywhere on the coast. Got told to
bring sleeping bag, personal hygiene, personal medications, insect repellent, sun screen, rain gear, flashlight, basic medical jump kit for minimal first aid.
Any other Fire / EMS department wanting to help go to:

Lets hear if anyone else is going

Another thing you might want to watch for is theft. Some people are desperate, even with the government there. They are willing to do anything to get what you bring, even items for yourself.

Be prepared to protect yourself & belongings if the need arises.

Hi ya'll
Thanks for wanting to come and help down here!!!!!!!!! LORD knows we can use the hands everywhere along the gulf coast region. Although that said do bring sleeping bag, personal protection of all sorts, if you get my drift! But do make sure you get credentialed with some professional organization would hate to see ya drive all the way here and get sent home or take valuable time to "get her dun." May the LORD richly Bless [U]all who come and protect and be with you and your families while you serve as a servant to those who are in need.
Be aware it bezzz real warm down here too and dem skeeters izzz geten bigger by da day. Thar was a report 2 day that 1 tried to well you know hook up with a helicopter and well the copter got kinda wild for the poor fella cut him all to pieces. LOL
Welcome to the great states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama!!!!!!!!!!! just sorry this will be at such a difficult time.

yeah, there was a story it Dallas Morning News a few days back where a guy drove a truck full of whater to the superdome. when he got there he asked for some help unloading the water. and instead they stole his truck!

they also said they don't have the right boats for the work they're doing. said they needed pontoon boats. a guy I work with and his friend are gonna try to head down there next weekend with one of their pontoon boats. I think I'll prolly hitch a ride with them see if we can't help some. we're trying to get ahold of somebody ahead of time now to see if there'd be a place for us.
