jd,
I'm curious as to what sort of "gearbox" that suspicious sounding Speedo Place wants to install, and Why they would think anybody is actually that stupid? It sounds like a minature cash register of some sort to me. . . .
I jumped between 4:56:1 all the way to 2.78:1 ratios with 9" FoMoCo rears. As long as the drive gear on output shaft matches teeth pitch on driven gear of cable all I did was swap driven gear for the correct one. In fact I even did a 5.18:1 dana 70 with a gear plus a tire diameter change combo. . . . . no magic box though.
I have acquaintences in our Gendarmery (aka Local Law Enforcement community) and they're always willing to "shoot me with a speed gun" on request, or otherwise. I just drive through their beam a couple 3 or so times getting an avg read out from them to set or be sure my recordable speeds are within tolerance. . . .
Barry, I'd like to see a "salvage yard" in the North East Period! Seems as they have all become "Auto Recyclers & Dismantlers" with pricing to reflect their new "Pro" Status.
Ok I stopped by the Ford garage on the way home and the only one they had was a 16 tooth. I was hopping for a 17 but I bought the 16 anyway. It was only $5.00. The local pick N Pull charges about half of new price so I chose what I am getting there wisely. But the good thing is they generaly let you take home anything you can get in your pocket. So ***** and things are a free bee.
My garage is getting well stocked with small stuff. I'll let you guys know how the 16 works. After reading Johns post I'm a little worried I went to far. I am gonna run it through my ten mile trap in the morning. If it is to much at least my gas milage will go up. hehehe
Have them order one if you can't find one. It only takes a day or 2 to get one. Don't let them say they can't get it. I haven't been doing this for 30 years not to know.
I found it on line somewhere. It looks like a little 90 degree jobber. I too thought it was some sort of scam. When you call and talk with them the say that if it's just a gear change they go that route but if you can't they say you need their little box for $100.00.
I also told them a bit of a lye I thought I saw a nut connection at the end of the cable near the tranny but when I changed the gear tonight it is a solid connected cagle.
Barry I thought since you are a parts guy you would want to know the part nuber that was on the receipt reads CODZ *17271*A but it does say 16 R on the gear itself. It is molded into the plastic.
Would I order the same number and just tell them 17 teeth?
Read again and use what jowilker posted (pocket parts) at your local wrecker. Don't compare the 8 miles vs 10 driven as "Odie" will never match "Speedo". Get "Speedo" close ay possible and let "Odie" do what he wants. New vs worn tires will make a difference as well tire growth at speed. Far as gas mileage, go thru a marked area and note it (ratio difference) on your log if you keep track of your fuel mileage.

jd_silva, hows the parts pickins in Modesto vs the S.F. bay area? Getting alot fewer trucks, most are garbage when they hit the "Pick-N-Pulls in my area. old is mid 80's these days.

Beemer
Same here You get a 60's for every now and than but mostly Chevy and Dodge here in the valley. Those old Fords just keep on running don't you know....
Also checked milage on the way to work this morning and it is still recording low by about 6 tenths of a mile but the speed feels good. I am gonna find someone with a newer vehicle to clock me and see how close I am. Drove along side a sherrif for about 5 miles this morning and if he was doing the speed limit I was real close. He may have just been holding back to listen to this FE purrrrrrrrrrrrr.
jd_silva,
Unless i'm having bad recall years ago I believe there were different steel gears for the output shaft in the transmission as there is a limit on the nylon gear tooth range compatibilty. Get "speedo" corrected to the best and note "odies" error for fuel mileage. I have always seen "odies" between 8% to 14% slow on many trucks. On the bright side error correction will yield better fuel mileage.

If that CoDZ 17271-A gear is the right gear as to shape, gear direction, etc... you need C2DZ 17271-G for 17 teeth. It retails for $12.78 . It's purple in color.
Ok Barry the one I bought has 16 teeth and is also purple does the color mean anything?
Do they make a 15 tooth? The local Ford parts store says maybe after market.
I started with a 19 T and was short 2 miles for every 10 miles driven.
Installed a 16 T and now I am only .5 mile off in 10 miles driven.
I think I would be realy close with a 15.
The 15 tooth was superceded to the 16 tooth.I looked into that the other day at work. Because of the new sized tires, you may never get to an dead on figure.
I was on Social Security disability for 6 years. I grew tired of it and my health is better now (Diabetes complications). That's why I've been keeping my fingers in the pie, so to speak over the years at home. Parts is in my blood, so I went back to it. It's stressful at times, but I feel like I'm part of the world again. I'm only 51, so I've got a few years to go yet before I retire!
Well Barry it's good to hear your health is better and your back to work.
We are close to the same age I am 47 and the big D runs in my family also, both my father and grandfather had it when they passed away. I have it checked yearly just to be sure.
Well you take care and Thanks again for all your help.
