Question Power Steering Pump

I need to change powersteering pump on my 99. I`m tired of listening to it . Is there a difference in pump quality. Autozone had one with tank for somewhere around 85 dollars. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thankyou.

I agree.......there are many better places to buy from.
Since it isn't going out.....just making noise........go up on Ebay, and check out item #7996698543.
It looks like the right animal.....he gives it's part number.......can cross-check with dealer tomorrow. $65.00...OEM...new...with tank......16 hours left. Can't see how you could go wrong there.

A rebuild kit is cheeper AND you'll know that it's good! Usually, one of your buddies will have the tools to complete the job or just buy them and help your buddies out. My thoughts on the cheap auto store prices is that they'll replace only the part that's bad, so it's only gonna last you another 10K miles before you use their "lifetime" warranty.

Alan.. Did replacing your steering pump fix your noise problem? Where did you end up buying from? Price? Mine is whinning, and gets worst when you hit the brakes..

have you rebuilt one? and do you know if you can put a smaller pulley on the pump as well to help out with steering power at idle?

I haven't changed the pump yet, to many other things to spend my money on lately it seems. Thanks for all the input was leaning towards taking it to a dealer and haveing a new one put on, depending on the price.

I doubt that the design has changed much over the last 20+years, so what I've done in the past with other pulleys is to take your old one and try to find one at the junkyard. So scan the junkyards first to see if they have a selection of serpentine pulleys, then just make sure it has the same inside diameter for the input shaft. The offset is not too critical, anything w/in +/- 1/4", cause you adjust the offset when installing the pulley. Just be sure to keep your old pulley. Most auto stores will let you borrow/rent a good puller/installer.

I was thinking about that, all the pulleys that I saw for the 4.6 and 5.4 motors and such, looked like they where all the same size, the only one that I saw (so far) that looked like it might work would be the the alternator pulley and it is a huge difference in size. Would be nice to find one that is in between those two, as it would probably make a the difference we are looking for.

I don't think you need one that's noticebly smaller. I think if it was a 1/4" smaller in diameter, I think you'd see a difference at the wheel.

That was what I was thinking but, so far I have not been able to find one, also if it is only 1/4" small, I don't think you'd need to get a small serpentine belt either.

I've got a mechanic that seems pretty trustworthy...says he can replace mine for $180 complete... The stealership wants like $450 for the same job.

No disrespect on your mechanic friend, but if he installs a brand new one, not rebuilt, I'm sure it'll be better for a short while. After all the post I've read (a guy just replaced his and it was better for a little while, but the problem reoccurred), this seems like Ford dropped the ball on the pulley diameter or idle speed. The actual pump is a vane style, not like the impeller style of an oil pump, and what helps build pressure is rpm's. The only long term fix I can see is a smaller diameter pulley or higher idle rpm.
