Hey, Guys/Gals- I'll admit I'm a wannabe Expy mecahnic as my posts may indicate...- on my own 2001 4.6 that is. I have owned a few vehicles and do my best to do my own work... blah, blah, blah... I really like just disappearing into my work bay for a while! Anyway... simple question for you pros out there... I want to replace my struts- front end. Do I need special equipment- a hoist- special jacks- special lift kits? How do I pull the weight off the thing to remove it and do it without winding up an EMS call? If I need equipment- what kind? Are there alternatives? Thanks guys/gals!!
If by struts, you mean MacPherson struts, you're in luck: Your Expy doesn't use them. Assuming that your Expy does NOT have the optional air suspension package, it uses four good old-fashioned shock absorbers.
If you haven't done so already, you should buy a Haynes or Chilton Manual for your Expy. Not the last word in manuals, but good for someone who wants to tackle relatively simple tasks.
A shock absorber changeout is generally uncomplicated, although the rear shock on the driver's side may be a little tougher than usual due to encroachment from the fuel tank.
yep, no struts... shocks, and they are not tough to do. Took me about 20 mins on each one, basic tools... except for the driver rear, like paulc says, that one took me about 90 minutes.
Check E-Bay if ya like to do the Internet thing, I got 4 for my 00 Expy for $48.40 total delivered right to my door, they are Gabriels, 2nd best model from the top. Really improved my ride for sure.
