Anyone ever hear of MAS making a humming noise? Happens on warmer days 95+, intermittent problem making it hard to diagnose. 98Ranger/4.0L belongs to relative in Southern California(250 miles from me). ANY help or insite is appreciated
I would suspect a noisy IAC valve. I have never heard of a noisy MAF. I guess anything is ossible though. M 97 is humming in hot weather also and I suspect the IAC, but I am not sure.
IAC? Intake Air Control? Relative mentioned something on the engine side of the intake tube that looks like a motor, could it be? Thanks for the reply Red.
IAC's have been known to hum and/or make a sound similar to a foghorn on some 4.0's. They are located on the upper intake manifold behind the butterfly valve.
My IAC caused this fog horn sound like a huge vacumn cleaner.
I replaced mine with Borg Warner part number 22972 from Pep Boys for $60 + tax.
Cured the problem.
The IAC actually stands for Idle Air Control. It regulates air flow at idle to compensate for cold starts or extra load of power steering pump, a/c, or transmission in drive or park. Sometimes they go bad and the engine stalls or races at idle. Other times they go bad and still function normally, but make humming noises.
