Unhappy Help 1999 7.3

Here is a weird one I have a 1999 7.3 I left Utah to go to California to pick up a car about 600 miles each way. On the way down it ran fine. We stopped and got some gas about 20 minutes down the road it started to run rough and was knocking loud and would hardley idle. We figured we got water in the fuel it ran bad the rest of the way to the car. We then replaced the fuel filter and that didn't help alot so we added some additive to get rid of the water we got from some repair shop. Then it got real bad the only way we could travel was to empty the fuel canister and baby the motor up to about 1500 - 2000 rpm then go for a while then it would just kill it got harder and harder to get it to go again. We stopped to switch drivers I told my freind just for the heck of it leave the valve open and I would try to start it. It started up great and idled great but the knocking was still there so now we figured we were getting to much fuel so we hook up a switch through the fuse panel so we could regulate the fuel manually we made it all the way back home by doing this. I now have it at my freinds shop we replaced the IPR - computer - IDM I am lucky he had some used parts to try. Any help would be very much appreciated. I am no diesel mechanic

Although I havn't heard of one lasting that long without going completly out........you might want to replace the cam position sensor....(CPS for short). From what you've described.....that's what it sounds like. It may be a coincidence that it happened after a fuel stop.

A cam sensor will not act that way. It will run fine then stall, restart, stall ect.. Is it smokeing at all? How much fuel was in it when you filled it?

I had basically the same thing happen to me. I fueled up and the truck ran so bad that I went through 3 fuel filters in a week and it still hasn't been quite right since that day. I have even taken it to the stealership and had them run it on the computer and all the numbers come back ok, but still urns rough and makes a lot of noise. I just put the HPX on it and it did seem to quiet it down some, next will be the in tank mod. My fuel pressure is at about 65 at idle and never dropped below 60 at WOT so i'm really about clueless at what else to do, but it is irritating. Oh I've also ran about 20 tanks off fuel through it since that happened too.

Hi again thanks for getting back. I was almost empty that is why we stopped at this little gas station out in the middle of no where I really think it had something to do with water in the diesel. But what it took out I have no idea. I know it was running bad back firing blowing white smoke and would not idle and knocking real bad at about 8000 rpm which will go away when you rev up the motor. What a nightmare

That sounds like gas to me. Pull the intake boot off of the turbo. Check end and side play. I know some one that did just the same thing. Had to replace the turbo within a couple hundred miles.

Hi well I am back with some more news. Went to my buddies shop to check on statis of truck told him what I had talked about says the turbo is fine. He now has replaced the BARO - CMP - ICP - IDM - IPR - MAP- Sensors and the PCM still the same what is weird we took out the spring and the valve on the return line and it ran better than it has for a while with only 10 lbs fuel pressure it idled on it's own. We were able to run the test and found no sensor problem ( no codes ) Starting to think Fuel Injectors. I hope not ! Any help would be appreciated

How many miles on your truck? When my truck was nearly new in 2000, I had a Ford Mechanic tell me that the injectors in the 7.3 PSD were prone to problems around 100K miles and his description of the problem was very similar to what you describe. He told me that if I started to experience injector problems near the 100K mile mark...even if my PSD warranty was expired...To let Ford know that I was aware of the inherent injector problems and they would repair it...NO CHARGE!...I don't know how much truth there was to his statement...But my truck is nearly 6 years old w/90K miles and going strong...Just thought I'd throw out what I'd heard and maybe it will generate more comments from the FTE Pro's...GOOD LUCK!!

never heard of the injectors failing at 100k miles, mine have nearly 300k (294,000miles) without a hitch.
