I have a 97 explorer with the SOHC 6 cylinder in it with 96,000 miles. I bought it when it had 30,000 miles on it and heard the ping about a month after buying it but it would usually go away after the truck warmed up.
Well my wife drives it now and she pulled up the other day and the truck sounded like there was a machine gun in the engine. So yesterday I changed the oil, plugs, wires, filters etc etc etc and added some oil treatment. The click is still there and I know it is coming from the #4 (drivers side front) and that plug was the only fouled plug that I had when I changed them yesterday.
Now this isnt a normal click or a ping it is LOUD, loudest at an Idle, and the speed picks up with RPM's and when you get past about 3500 it goes away- only to come back when you get back under 3500 or so....Ideas? other than a complete rebuild?
there is a tsb/or recall for replacing the left hand timing chain tensioner and intake gaskets for the problem you are having.the only reason i say this is because you stated it is near the #4 cylinder.
thanks for the reply, I noticed you were in Duncan- I am in Lawton...Small world. I guess that would make sense then since the click goes away when the RPM's go up? But what about why that plug would be fouled?
