my '79 f-250 4X4 4spd 400 is beginning to bog down SEVERELY when driving anywhere but in the driveway. It will begin to sound like its drowning, with a low rumble and a complete loss of power (but the engine does not shut off). if i disengage the clutch, the engine comes back to a normal idle, as well as if i pull over and let it sit in neutral. once it sits for a few seconds i can take off again, but in a few more seconds it boggs down again. if i had money i would just replace everything in the fuel and electrical systems and be done with it. but i dont have very much money so i need to know which part is most likely the culprit. i'm going to start with the fuel filter since its cheap. thanks fokls!
Gord: If that works, let us know. Oherwise, check the following:
Fuel system: Carb float to high or low or stuck, crud in the carb, stuck accelerator pump or power valve, bad needle and seat. other sticking parts inside. If you put a carb kit in it, it would fix most of the major possibilities. Also, check the fuel intake screen on the pickup tube in the gas tank.
Exhaust system: Plugged catalytic converter, plugged muffler. I once had a Ford catalytic converter disintegrate on me, and all the pieces got pushed down into the muffler. Part of it was a flexible metal screen sort of like window screening, and it trapped the little pieces and plugged up like a filter inside the muffler. I could go about a half mile or so, and then the pressure would finally compress that plugged screen so much that it blocked the exhaust. The car would just bog down like you described. Sorta like it's get up and go got up and left. I let it sit for all of 20 or 30 seconds or so, would start right up and idle OK, but as soon as I tried to drive off, there it went again.
Sounds like a bad fuel pump to me.I had the same thing happen to me and that is what it was.

well, yesterday i took off my muffler, shook it around, got a few loose little chunks out of it, then sprayed the carb and linkages down completely. now it runs just fine. i can't see how what i did actualy solved the problem. but hopefuly it did. i drove it around lots and nothing happened. i was thinking it would be something a lot more serious, since the symptoms were serious. well thanks for your help guys, especialy the tip on the exaust, i never would have though of that as a problem. thanks again!
