I have a 74 F-250 with a 390 and a C6 tranny, my problem is when I shift the tranny into 1st gear then try to climb any kind of a hill it will pop out of 1st into 2nd. Is this normal for a C6 transmission? I am not very wise in the ways of these things so I hope someone can help me out. I am not sure if the tranny needs some work or the linkage is bad. The shifter on the column has some play in it and I thought that might be the cause. The previous owner has done something to the tranny to make it shift smoother for highway driveing, I am assuming that he put a shift kit in it or something. It seems that the tranny is always in a higher gear than it needs to be, and it wont rev out a gear very good. I hope that someone can point me in the right direction with a fix of some sort. By the way this is a great site! Thanks for the help.
What is happening is the torque from the motor is acting on your shift linkage, causing the trans to shift down a gear. What has happened to me before is I found a bolt was missing in the trans tail housing-to-crossmember connection, and the other bolt was loose. You may also have worn engine mounts, causing too much movement. After checking it all out and tightening anything loose, try to adjust the linkage with trans in 'D', or third detent from the back on the linkage.

Ford started it; Ford will finish it!
Thanks for the help Mark. I took my kickdown rod off the other day and that seemed to fix it. It also looks like one of my motor mounts needs to be replaced, so that will be my next project.
