got a question for ya'll... I have been hearing a clunk coming from my front wheels after I apply the brakes with some force on my 2000 f-150 4x4. I had the ball joints and tie rod ends and the idler arm replaces under warranty a few months ago.
I took the wheels off and inspected the calipers/caliper mounts/pads, etc. I noticed that the rotor were easily removed from the hub, and the holes where the lug nuts go seem to be much too big, and create some play which I believe is causing the noise. I did have a dealer machine the rotors in may , before I had the truck shipped to germany, where I am now stationed.
I have noticed that the 7700 series f-150 rotors have 14 mm lugs, and mine should have 12mm lugs. my question is: Is there suppossed to be any play in the rotor? it doesn't seem right to me. It didn't make this noise prior to getting the rotors machined, and I'm wondering if maybe the dealer put the wrong rotors back on my truck? I know I have no chance of getting them to pay for it if they did, I just want to replace the rotors before they cause any undo damage if they are in fact the wrong ones for my truck. Other than the noise, the brakes work fine.
I just put all 4 rotors on my 03' screw a month ago and I didn't notice any play in the front rotors. Also the parts guy didn't ask me about the size in the front he only asked if I knew the back size 14mm or 12mm, I went with the 12mm and guessed correct cause that is what was on the rear. As far as the front I noticed very little play, not nearly what you are describing.
Some time in 99 the lugs were changed to 14mm in all F150s. For 03 you should have 14mm. The 00 may be a matter of build date as to whether it is 12mm or 14mm.
