First gear problem
Our 1994 F-150 with a five speed manual has developed a first gear selection problem. First and third gear were getting difficult to select so I changed the oil in the transmission as a first step. The transmission shifts much better now in all gears except first. The shift lever seems to have more than normal play and the lever goes almost all the way to the dash when going into first. There is no grinding just a lot of travel and stiffness. Is there some kind of bushing in the ball joint where the shift lever enters the top of the transmission? Is there some other common cause for this problem?
