Hey guys, I found a great deal on a 1999 F450 and it is almost exactly what I'm looking for, 7.3, 6 spd, 4x4 (w/manual shift), crew cab and the colors are even right (white ext, grey int) the only problem is that it's an XL and is lacking some comforts that I'm used to (Lariat). I just curious if the wiring harness is the same for a XL, XLT and Lariat? If I were to come across a totalled truck that I could snag the power seats/window/lock/mirror components etc, would it be a simple plug and play type deal? I'm fairly new to Fords and I'm unsure about adaptablity. I've owned other brands where the wiring is all run and you can simply plug the accessory in and your good to go.
I know someone post up and say that I should just wait and find the right truck to begin with and it will be cheaper than adding all this stuff after, I agree it will be more money but I need a work truck right now and this truck is a great deal. Also XLT and Lariat F450 and F550 are tough to find and usually very expensive when you do.
If you get ahold of a donor truck, you should be able to swap everything as a whole assembly. you need it all, and you dont junk the donor until your complete system is working.
Plan on scoring a service manual, preferably the factory one, to make the swap much easier. What you want to do should not be a problem with the proper documentation and access to a truck of the same build period. The SuperDuty interior & doors come apart fairly easily with a cordless screwgun if you know where the screws are, that's why the service manual.
As far as the harnesses being the same, the XL and XLT might be but the Lariat probably isn't. Compounding the confusion is the 1999 and the 1999.5 changes. The 1999 actually came out in January 1998. Also during this period a lot of componet and wire harness production was being moved to Mexico from the States so it was easier to make a change.
The seats, console, interior trim will bolt right up to the XL, but the wiring will probably not be there. You can buy aftermarket power window kits for some old trucks, not sue about a 450 tho. XLT and lariats are REALLY expensive, if you can even find one. My mom had a 1997 F-superduty(450) XLT, bought new in 97, sold in 00 but i can't remember how much she paid.

As I understood it for my year ('04) XL has a different harness than XLT and Lariet. But the XLT and Lariet are the same. With such a large purchase hanging in the ballance here, I'd pop a door pannel off and look to be sure. Even the best info off the net can still be wrong.
The XL probably would have a diffrent harness because of the lack of power options, but you could always ask your ford dealer. I personally would never buy an XL, mostly because I can't stand vinyl seats and I NEED a radio.

This truck has some options like a radio (tape/am/fm), A/C and a cloth bench...I forgot to check for tilt and cruise. Stereo is easy enough to swap as are bucket seats. I'm just concerned about the wiring.
Just out of curiosity, how much did you pay for the truck? The wiring harness(es) could be btained from a ford dealer or the junkyard. A custom shop could be of help as well. Don't forget to change the decals too. Im sure you don't want people to think your driving around in an XL.
for the price you paid for the truck , I would search out a parts truck and steal the harness. and swap away...
or you could get some aftermarket power door setups, and some factory xlt door panels and wire the aftermarket power window parts to the factory switches.
Same for the seats... you could just wire them up to an aux power block.
