Just bought a new 2005 EB 2WD to replace my 1997 XLT 2WD which my son had been begging me to sell him for over a year. While I like my new truck, there are several things I really liked about the 1997 much better. Most of the things I don't like have to do with Ford's attempt to make things less expensive for them. Oh well.... However there is one thing I really don't like. The vehicle height on 2005 is the same for 2WD or 4WD. I prefer the overall height of the 1997 and was wondering if anyone has lowered a 2005 EB. I am looking for about a 3" drop. If you have, what type of changes have you experienced with handling, etc? What kit was used?
On a positive note, the only engine avail on the 2005s is the 5.4 3 valve engine. It actually gets better mileage than my 97 with the 4.6 engine. More power and slightly better gas mileage. That I do like!!!
no, not looking for a slammed look, maybe 3" is too much but you get the idea. I am more interested in if anyone has lowered their 2005 Expi and what the handling results, etc, are. I do not off road at all, I am just interested in getting closer to where I was with the 97 2WD XLT as far as height. Entry/exit were so much easier, etc.
I'd like to drop mine about 2" if possible. I think it would feel a little more stable and of course be easier to get in and out of.
I read something on here about Torsion bars but I've never found a link that actually shows pictures how to DIY. I read about people lowering their Escalades by an inch or two themselves, so I'm sure it's not any big deal.
Your 2005 doesn't have torsion bars, it's a coilover set-up all around. All you need to lower you truck is to put on a set of lowering springs. I know Eibach and Intrax make a set for our trucks, and I'm sure there are others out there. Stay away from the Ebay stuff unless it's a known name. The Intrax are only like $250 and the Eibach's are probably about the same. It's not worth saving $50 on something you don't recognize for something this inexpensive to begin with. You should be O.K. with a 2" drop on the stock dampers, but anything lower and you will want to replace them as well. I haven't seen an entire coilover system for our truck but I would imagine they are out there. Swapping springs is relatively easy and can be done in half a day with the right tools.
