6.9 blue smoke running problem

6.9 blue smoke running problem
Hello everyone, its been a while since my last post.
first off I have a 1987 f250 with a 6.9 176,000 miles
my problem is the other day the truck was running fine then it started to spit and sputter loosing power while going down the road, I changed the fuel filter(I always carry an extra) and the problem seamed to go away.
well today on the way home from work it was doing it again with lots of blue smoke(the truck burns about 2 quarts over the course of 3000 miles) the smoke does not smell like oil. while the engine is at idle it seems to run fine as you give it the fuel it seems like it is missing. I did a search before this post and it looks like its going to be an injector pump. I just wanted to see if you guys concour with this or if you might have any othe hints.
if it is the pump do you just take the old one off and put the new one on without adjustment or is it more involved? I dont have a book for this truck but I am handy with a wrench.

try running diesel kleen, power service, stanadyne performance first in tanks. perhaps you got some dirt in an injector. if that doesnt work, try shorting out each cylinder (breaking loose each fuel line at the injector, one at a time) the one that makes no difference is the bad injector. Once you do that try moving the injector to another hole and do the same thing. notice if the miss follows the injector. they are made to produce about 1400 psi pop off pressure and do weaken or break during several miles of use and should be replaced. there is also a copper crush washer beneath each injector and should be replaced when new (rebuilt) injector is used.
