The ignition is getting difficult to turn on my 94 aerostart 3.0L. I had new keys cut several months ago at the dealer using the factory key codes. The old ones would not open the doors anymore. Everything worked fine for about 8 months.
The ignition is difficlut to turn now, like the key is catching on something. It can't be the keys since it happens regardless of wich copy we use.
How difficult is it to replace the ignition? Looks like you have to take the stearing column cover off.
its pretty simple to replace the lock cylinder on a 94 but you may need to check and see that the cylinder is your only prob. First put the key in & turn to on/run position then under the column on the right side below the key and about 1 1/2" in you'll see a hole, stick a 1/8" pin or strong pen in the hole depressing a button and remove the whole cylinder. Check how it opperates outside of the column, if it still is difficult to opperate replacement lock cylinders are readily avail. If it works easily you may have other probs. I replaced mine about two yrs. ago & when I removed mine, it fell apart in 5 pieces. Supposed to be a 1 piece unit lol. Good luck.
On our Aero, it was obvious the keylock had been previously replaced, as the door and ignition keys were different. It got tto where it didn't want to turn regardless of which key I used. WE took it to a key and lock place. Took them 30 minutes to replace the cylinder, and set it to use the same key as the door. And the cost was not significantly more than replaceing the cylinder myself. It came to 53.80 after all was said and done.
To match the key you just remove the tumblars by pulling them out and match them to the door cylinder.
I had to replace my glove box lock when it failed and locked me out I had to get a coat hanger to push down the striker to get it open man that thing is so secure .
When I got the new cylinder they included a tumblar kit with springs each tumblar had a number so I pulled the tublars out of the old cylinder read the numbers on them and put the new ones in the same track on the new cylinder.
Piece of cake. If your cylinder isn't your problem though it may be the actual ignition switch thats causing the hard turning.
Once on another car of mine I had to remove the cylinder and start the car with a screwdriver to drive to the dealer and get a new one. Unfortunately I had to fill up on gas and since you can't pump your own in NJ I got a wierd look when the attendant saw me starting my car with a screwdriver . Probably checked with the police to see if I was on the stolen vehicle list .
