I've been to DFW twice and was surprised at how little accent urbanite Texans actually have. Outside of saying "Y'aw" after every sentence, just like a Canadian says "eh?" the Texans I talked to sound just like they came from Shelby, Montana.

Canadians are the ones with the neutral accent people, we dont say "Stap" for stop or "Warsh" for wash.. that's why so many of your national newscasters are Canadian, eh? Like Morley Safer, John Roberts, and the late Peter Jennings. and Actors, like Keifer Sutherland, Jim Carey etc. etc.
No accent, y'aw.

As a salesman, I used to give presentations to groups at corporations across the country. I recall flying up to Boston to make a pitch to a group of about twenty people. I walked into the conference room and all conversation stopped and every eye was focused on me. Expecting an introduction, I just smiled and waited. After what seemed an eternity, the contact person, the only one I had spoken with, said, "Talk for us". Taken aback slightly, I introduced myself, told them the purpose of my visit and spent about forty minutes explaining the benefits of the services I was selling. It takes about three words from my mouth to make my southern roots apparent and they seemed to enjoy every "y'all" and "that dawg won't hunt" that I uttered. They could also tell that I was amused by "paack tha kaar down by the krick". It was all in good humor and the trip was productive.

I'm from Kentucky, I've been told I have a accent.
-"Hey Sam, you gonna catch a fish anytime soon"
-me: "im fixin' to catch one." I guess whenever I say I'm fixin' to do something it's a give away.
also when i say "ohio" it sounds like "ohiya"
and i guess when I say the "mother"-"f" word, the F is kinda replaced with a V.
I dont say Ya'll though, never did like that
i also say "krick" ocassionally. Most of my accent is pretty much gone since I've been up here in Ohio for such a long time, but whenever I go back to Paintsville, it seems to be revived or something.

Yes Ringo, a lot of our newscasters are Canadian. But do you know what a lot of them did, Peter Jennings in particular?? Go through speech classes to lose the Canadian accent. Swear to God! Listen to Peter's earlier stuff, he spoke with a definite Canadian accent. Jim Carrey also struggled to lose it while working as a stand up comic here in the states. You can still pick it up when he is speaking, out of character........

Y'all got to bear in mind that TEJAN is a slang that is spoke SLOW....

Like you half asleep when you speakin' it. So it comes out altogether different when you hear it....

I personally like that - it tells me that what is said is thought of first, and still being considered as it is said!

Some jackass on a flightline once told me he thought "FIXIN" was a dumb word, and I explained it to him.

I said: "Them Props are 'fixin' to turn at high RPM's, are you willing to be 'FIXIN" to be standing underneath them if I tell you not to in that way?"

He took my point....

yep, for some reason, people seem to have a fascination with the way us texans speak. my girlfriend (lives in oregon) gives me a hard time about my drawl. i say "in-tres-ting" instead of "in-ter-es-ting". she likes it though. i talked to a friend of her's on teh phone a lil while back. she she got off with me i could hear her shrieking in the background "oohhh!!! i i just LOVE his cute accent!" i say fixin to, ya'll....oh, thats another thing my gal says "ya'll" sometimes up there in Oregon, and she says she gets the wierdest looks (she's spent her summers down here since she was 6). i'll have to see what kind of reaction i get when i go up there for a month over christmas....should be interesting....
