Just picked up my new SD/SC 4X4 and, after reading the "Scheduled Maintenance Guide", it appears that the only recommended chassis lubrication requirements is to "inspect and lubricate front axle shaft U-joints" every 15,000 miles. Am I missing anything here?
On my '99 and '03 there are grease points on the steering componets but that's it. Until the ball joints wear out and you replace them with Moog componets, but that's 75,000 miles from now.
I'm trying to think off hand: 1 on each front u-joint (2), 2 or 3 on the steering linkage (4/5), and I "think" there is one or two others. Just look everywhere that has a joint too it. Some are difficult to see. The only u-joints that have zerks is the front axle u-joints. None on the drive shafts or in the rear, that I could find.
I have asked the dealer repeatedly to lube the chassis and they claim "that there is no need to as the system is sealed." I think this is a bunch of crap. I have a 4x4, how often do all the zerks listed in previous replies need to be greased and what grease should be used? I have 60,000 miles and do not have any problems, but do not want any as this is such a simple exercise, and good insurance.
Like beast said, it's cheap insurance and takes all of 5 minutes to hit them. They are all easy to get at and the only ones you really have to get under the truck for is the ones on the u-joints (if your truck has them).
