replacing exhaust manifold

Hey all looking at replacing my exhaust manifolds on my 1994 F150 I-6. I have a bad exhaust leak coming from up front and i think that is where its coming from. does anyone have any detailed instructions on a forum i can refer to? also how many bolts will i be dealing with so far i only see one per outlet. also does the intake manifold need to be removed at all perhaps for installing the new gasket? also any recommendations on using a header for replacement will it be cheaper , easier though i want to hook up to my stock cat thanks for the help

The intake exhaust use the same gasket (one piece), the alternator/ smog pump bracket needs to be moved, if I recall correctly, its been a few years...you have to seperate the upper from the lower intake, be very carefull removing the egr to intake bolts on the back of the intake, mine snapped with very little effort applied.

Check with any popular header company they should have something...I used clifford on my efi but I am sure others would work well and save you a few dollars at that.

There are 12 or 13 bolts (9/16 if i'm not mistaken) holding on the intake and exaust manifold. You will have to seperate the intake from the exaust if its still the stock combined manifold.

Be careful when putting the manifolds back on...a leak there is a huge problem (and it's not fun to realize that you have a leak around the gasket and have to take it off and do it all over again...take my word for it).

I used the red high temp permatex gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket. works terrific.

It can be done in a saturday easy.

would you guys use air tools or stick with the grunt wrench?
I have the gasket kit but get overwhelmed when I see all the bolts and stuff to move.

The hardest part was getting the manifolds on there with the red sealent all over the gasket. Once I got a bolt in on each side it was simply a matter of bolting everything back.

As far as wrenches go, a regular torque wrench works fine. Since the bolts are kind of long and the bottom ones are difficult to get to, I used a regular socket on them until they became snug. Then I used a torque to tighten them.

You could replace some of the bolts with automotive grade studs. That helps hold the gasket and the manifolds as you put it back together.

Hey guys. I just had my EGR tube replaced but now I do hear the exhaust manifiold leak (tick). I have the gasket as stated before but people keep warning me that the bolts are known to break.

Is the anything I need to do to prep before removing the rusty looking bolts?
What can be done if one does break?

I don't really want to spend the $400 I was quoted to install the gasket.
On a 1 - 10 scale. 10 being horrible. How hard is it to remove the intake and exhaust manifolds on a 1995 EFI?

Thanks.

I dont konw about EFI, but it took me about an hour to get the manifolds off of my carburated truck. but that's after konwing exactly what to do and everything. If its your first time it will obviosly take you longer.

That's a tough call. When I replaced my motor, they all came out pretty easily, but my truck isn't from a rusty state. The hardest part for me was reaching all of them - I'm not all that tall, and it's a reach to get to the rear bolts.

If everything comes out smoothly, you're looking at about a 4 or maybe a 5.

If you start breaking bolts off, it will start going up accordingly.

I am 6'1" but my fenders are as high as my armpits.

I am usually sitting on the rad for any engine work.

the bolts came out real easy for me do to a heavy coating of oil from leaks in the valve cover though I really expected one to snap or strip, any body have a pic of efi manifolds on a carbed engine? there are only two pins to hold the gasket to the intake a friend of mine suggested tieing it on the maniflods with thread at the bolt holes then cut the thread and pull it out.could use very thin monofiliment(4lbs or maybe 2)
