Transmission Problems
Here's the history on my 2001 F350 PS Auto transmission Problems. I do lots of towing with my truck. I only have 50K on it and over 75% is towing miles.
I bought the truck because I knew I was going to do lots of towing. I kept the truck stock until just reasonly. I live in Stroudsburg, PA near the Delaware river.
I purchase a toy hauler 38.5' weight 12,500K in 10/2004 and towed it from NY to PA about 300 miles, no problems I had around 40K miles on the truck by then. I went to VA in 3/2005 towed the toy hauler had some transmission problems I throught on the way back. When pulling away from a toll both I notice the transmission seam to slip a little.
I noticed when I came home while backing up the trailer the transmission temp went hot fast. I was debating then, if I should put another transmission cooler on, but I didn't. Because I was going to Sturgis, SD from PA with my Toy hauler, I bought BANKS POWER PACK. Put the Banks System on and went to Sturgis, SD. No problems towing out and back. The transmission temp ran from 170-210 while towing out and back, until I got home. While backing up the toy hauler the transmission temp went to 240F, not good. Two days later I drove to Phila, PA and back no problems. Went out the next morning started driving my truck and it wouldn't shift into second gear. Toke the next day to a auto transmission garage and had it code and test driven. They verified that shifting into second gear wasn't there.
Now, the transmission garage is going to rebuild my transmission and beef it up for I don't have this problem again. Joke, we all know Fords auto tranmissions suck. Should I put another cooler on or use syn oil??? Or should I sell my Truck and buy a Duramax truck?
2001 4R100 transmissions behind the diesels had a one way clutch called a mechanical diode. It's been a disaster. Many of them fail, and when they do you don't get a 1-2 shift.
When the trans is rebuilt and this clutch replaced with a standard one way clutch it should be good for a long, long time.
