All the talk I have been reading about idleing. I let my truck warm up till it is past the cold-cold and first normal. I also let it cool off for about 5mins is this to much idle time for the 6.0?
... I let mine idle for two minutes and then drive very carefully accelerating slowly until I reach op tem, that could be a mile or three, I do warm it up longer in the winter....cool down I let the EGT come down to 300/400. When I know I ma going to stop, like coming home I drive the last mile very conservative to let all the temps come down slow.
I have a similar question, if you can't let it idle how are you supposed to let it warm up? I thought maybe the "high idle mod" would be a good solution...
In the morning, I only let it idle for about 30 seconds and then pull away slowly. If I wait any longer, the elderly ladies in their nightgowns might venture outside to see about the racket and give me the stink eye. Oh the humanity.......
Just for a realistic reference, of idle time, what is the avearage time of 2 traffic light cycles, usually close to 5 min. I would say no more than 10. This is what I use on my truck, if it is going to be more than 10 min, I flip the fast idle switch on. I never never shut down during fueling while on the interstate, I don't have a turbo saver, or gages yet, (new house takes presidence) but I know better than to shut down a turbocharged engine that has been working. On warm up I would recomend a fast idle, as it will build the egt quicker, bring up oil pressure a little more, and prevent wet stacking. I would say that I agree with Tim, 2 min then drive it sane til it warms up under load. (Not doing the trans, or diff any justice if the motor is warm, and not the rest of the driveline)
The manual says you should let it idle for up to ten minutes after heavy use, ie. towing, highway driving, etc.
So, I think that since we are "supposed" to idle for ten minutes to cool the beast down then I believe it's safe to say we can idle for ten minutes to warm up. Let the neighbors stare...
