Axles and diffs.

Alright, I discovered that I only have 3.08 gears in the ole Bronc'nstein.
Now, I am wanting to upgrade the gears, but I am also wanting to put 36 inch humvee tires on her when i get back from Iraq and the tires come with an eight lug pattern on the rims. Would it be easier if I just swapped the entire axle? Would the axle from an F-250 or 350 work on a Bronco? I would be doing this myself and i would feel more comfortable replacing an axle than messing with gears.

If you're going to put 36" tires on a Bronco, you're going to be changing gears no matter what.

It would be a lot easier to shop for tires and wheels based on what's already on the truck. I doubt that humvee wheels will fit Ford axles.

Here's the order you should be making decisions in:

How big do I want my tires to be? Then, what gears do I need to install?

How much lift do I need to clear tires that big?

How hard am I going to wheel this thing? Based on that, what axles do I need? Based on that, you pick a rim. Then you add your tires to your rims. Put them on the axles with the gears that you've picked, and you have a complete package.

You have a TTB front suspension so you would have to do a solid axle conversion, but I've heard that a D60 could be swapped in out back fairly easilly, but you would need longer driveshafts.
But yeah, the 8 lug GM wheels will not fit on a 8 lug ford axle, because of the bolt pattern. You could use those 36" tires all you want, but you'd need about a 6" lift to clear them.
Also you will need new gears for any axle, so 4.11 or 4.56 would work good.

the ford ttb will handle up to a 37" tire as long as the front end is not locked. your gonna need a 6" suspension lift and at least a 4.56 or 4.88 gear. you wont need to change axles unless you feel your gonna really wheel this bronco. in that case look into either a 10.25 sterling rear or chevy 14bolt . and for the front a Dana44 would suit your needs fine doing an SAS. do a search for that on the web you will find a few forums that talk only about doing that type of work. know that even with used parts an sas will run ya about 1500-2000 easy.

Thank you all very much for the replies. I had realized I'd need a lift to run those tire but the info on the SAS and gear ratios was very much appreciated. That's why i love reading this forum so much.
