Wiring Questions

I am in the process of rewiring my 54 f-100 and have a couple of questions. These may be obvious, but electrical is the one part of a car that I don't understand.

1. My front turn signals have two wires coming from them. Does it matter which is running lights and which is for the turn signals?

2. There are three wires coming from the top of the colum for the turn signals. They are blue, green, and red. Does anyone know which is which?

3. There are three wires coming from the high beam switch on the floor. How do I tell what each is for, or does it matter?

1. the turn/park is a two element bulb, so yes it does matter which wire. Connect each wire one at a time to a battery, grounding through the lamp base and use the brightest element wire for a turn signal.

Welcome to the board, you have found the right place to get answers.

There are tons of folks around here who have installed new harnesses, adapted original harnesses, and/or buil there own.

#1, yes it does matter, but I don't know which color is which on yoru truck. The bulb has two filaments, one is for the parking lights and the other for the turns signal. The turn signal is brighter that the parking light. You could always put some power to each wire and see which one is brighter, or look at teh wires on both sides of the truck, on wire should be the same at both the left and right sides, this will be the parking lights. and the other wil be turn signals.

#2, No clue, sorry

#3, one wire should be the power source to the lights, one is to the low beams and the other for the high beams.

I'm sure that one of the wizards will come along here momentarily and be ablet o supply a schematic for you

Good luck
Bobby

I'm sure there is an easier way to get you there but George (our moderator) has a wiring diagram for the 56 (should be similar) on Earl's World. Go to the top "read first" thread on this board and then click on Earl's World and then the Reference Materials. Hope this is not too confusing.

Here's a post to make it easier. Click on the link in my signature block, then go to the reference materials page. As Larry said, can't guarantee the 54 is the same color coding as the 56, but it more than likely is.

Seems like there ought to be more wires for the turn signal switch - like six?

Here's a diagram for the 53-55. I copied it off the web somewhere, so I don't know who to give the credit to. Hope it helps.

Thanks for all the help. I checked George's site and looked at the diagram above. Hopefully I can figure it all out.
