Differences in Weight Distributing hitches?
I am NOT a hitch expert, but I have used my EazLift for about 8 years. What I say is from memory of reading the manual 8 years ago and road experience with this rig. I have the regular single antisway system with adjustable head angle.
The weight bars are available in several weights. You should select a pair that is near the tongue weight you plan to haul.
For example, I have an 8,000#(GVWR) trailer and the standard EazLift hitch. I have 750# bars. In reality I should probably have 1000# bars since 1) Tongue weight is between 10% and 15% so my weight should be between 800 and maybe 1200#s. 2) The bars do seem to need more links in order to transfer enough weight. 3) In my opinion, the ride is a little soft due to the under sized bars I am using.
When properly adjusted, the bars should be parallel with the A frame and have 3 or 4 links pulled. When my 750 pound bars are snugged to where I like it, they are not parallel, so I think the heavier bars are in order. You can adjust the angle of the hitch to change the parallelness of the bars, but this doesn't properly transfer the weight.
I have never had a problem with my rig. My rig drives excellent over rough roads and mountain trails. But like I said it seems a bit soft. I think the 1,000# bars would ride better. 1500# bars might be harsh.
You might ask the EaLift guys for their recommendations. I bet they have a website.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
