I purchased an '02 explorer sport the other week- loaded, 2 door etc... lease return. On a 60 mile trip we noticed that the air conditioning "Max A/C" didn't work so well, (it was a very hot day) seems that on not so hot days the a/c works a little better (all windows closed)
was wondering if this was normal? is the a/c temp tied to the outside temp? we found on our trip that it was cooler to shut off the a/c and roll down the windows...
my girlfriends gmc '02 malibu's a/c will freeze your toes blue on a hot day, so I suspect that mine might be faulty.
I am still under the 30 day warranty, so I can get the dealership folks to fix this -
sorry if this is a dumb question, I drove my old bronco II for 18 yrs till she rusted out from under me - it didn't have a/c
My '04 XLT (and the '02 I had before) will definitely chill you out on MAX A/C, and this is in Arizona; better have your system checked. BTW, MAX A/C doesn't pull in fresh air, it recirculates cabin air.
Yes, the AC's or more accurately the condenser's performance is definitely linked to the outside temperature. The temperature must be low enough to allow the refrigerant to cool to the point is condenses. If for some reason the ambient temperature is greater than that of the condenser = no AC.
The closer the temperature the harder the AC will have to work as the refrigerant reaching the evaporator has too much heat energy and is not properly cooled and is not expanding as it should.
Check that the radiator fan is working properly. If the AC seems to come and go then the fan may not be spinning as it should. The clutch may be bad and thus not engaging when or as it should.
All of the above is correct. While it is tied to the outside temperature, my '03 (which has front and rear A/C) will chill very nicely when the temp outside is over 100°F and the humidity is over 75%. Both will put a load on the system, although the humidity does help slightly with the air heat exchange efficiency over the condensor. Get it checked and repaired while under warranty. It should be able to put air out of the vents that's around 40° cooler than the outside air with the fan on maximum (greatest load).
thanks guys! my a/c is definitely NOT putting out air 40 deg colder than ambient. I am guessing that the "clicking" sound that I hear every few minutes is the a/c mechanisim cycling on and off - its going back to the dealer this week to fix this. (and 14 other items, stalling in traffic, water in a headlight, rear window hatch gasket falling off, etc etc....)
