Rebuilt engine wont start

I rebuilt my 302 in my 85 F150, I put in a crane cam and 24 lb/hr injectors. It still has the speed density system, but it should at least start. The only thing i'm getting is the occasional backfire through the Throttle body, or the Exhaust depending on what i do with the distributor, i cant seem to find anything that will make it start. This is how i timed it. I Lined up the timing mark on the harmonic balancer with the timing pointer, Then i removed the cap to the distributor and unbolted the distributor so i could move the rotor so it was hitting the #1 plug wire. And nothing. IT seems like it just wont fire when its lined up properly. If I start moving the distributor around it'll backfire, but wont start. HELP ME PLEASE. THere is one funny thing, when i was buying the plugs for the engine, the guy asked me if it was for a EFI or carb, and i told him EFI and he seemed like he didnt know what one he should grab, would it even make any difference? I pulled the #5 plug, and it's sparking just fine when its out of the engine.

I also suspected the heavier fuel injectors might be flooding it, so i unhooked the fuel pump shut off, and sprayd small amounts of gas down the TB and same thing, just backfires.

You may have the distubuter 180 off. I did this on my engine. Set it to the timing mark again and go to the companion cylinder 1 and 6. Did this on mine and it fired right up.

I would have to agree with FTR. You most likely have the dizzy 180 out. It is a common mistake, so dont feel bad. If the dizzy IS in fact installed correctly, you will have to check the fireing order of the camshaft and make sure you have your wires correct. The 302 and the 351W can both run the same cams, but they have different fireing orders, and the wires MUST be adjusted to compensate.
