I have a strange problem that I can't seem to figure out. I've done a bit of work on this truck so I'm not new to it but this one has me stumped. Anyhow the problem I'm having is the windows are not operating. I've tested the motors and both are functioning. I have power coming into the switch and coming out of the switch. But its not working while installed. I recently had a short in the common ground for the switches on the passenger side, which caused me to lose all function of both the door locks and windows. I've fixed that and it worked for a few weeks but then I lost the window function.
I don't know if that made sense cause I am a little confused but I hope you can offer some ideas.
So your saying that with the window motor installed and correctly in place, it has 12V going to it, but does nothing when you hit the button? Or can you hear the motor turning when you hit the button, but the glass dont go up?
If it has power, and does absolutely nothing when you hit the button.....I would think the master window switch on the drivers side could be faulty......do you have a known good one to check that one against?
The master window switch is the passenger side switch. The power feed wiring daisy-chains through the passenger switch to the driver's side door. Check the ground to the passenger side door. then recheck the actual passenger side switch to make certain you have voltage at the LT.BLU/BLK wire(s) coming to the center pin of the switch. The circuit breaker in position 14 of the dashboard fuse block feeds the windows. The above was making the rather broad assumption that your truck is an 84 or later model. Prior to 84 the wiring was slightly different and prior to 90 the circuit was protected by a fuse rather than a CB.
thanks I'll look into that. I checked the ground on the passneger side. It was frayed before and I had no door locks or windows. After fixing that I had everything for awhile, then I lost the windows. I assumed it was something else.
The truck is an 88 sorry about not posting that guys.
I will be checking the circuit this weekend. Thanks.
Also any ideas on how to check the switch, there are several wires going into it.
The switch should have about five or six wires coming from/going to it. The switch is a SPDT (Single Pole, Double Throw)with a common center terminal. This means that the center terminal is the power feed. Since I am not certain you have a meter, I'll describe testing it IN the truck with the window circuit "live".
With a test light or a voltage meter, touch the center pin (Lt. Blu/Blk) with one lead and a good ground (bare metal or ground terminal) with the other. If there is power coming into the switch, the light will light or the meter will read 12-13 volts DC. Assuming you have power at this point, leave the ground lead in place and touch the other to one of the outer terminals on the switch (Yel/Red or Red/Yel for the passenger side switch and Yel/Blk or Red/Blk for the driver's side switch). Press the switch so that it rocks AWAY from the terminal you are touching. Power should flow through the terminal and the light/meter should respond. If not, the switch is suspect. The unique point of these switches is that they handle BOTH sides of the circuit when the windows are operated. The "make-break" setup minimizes the number of wires needed to run the window motors. The nice thing is you can test the door lock switches the same way as the circuitry is identical (wire colors are different).
Well I've got the passenger side working now. But I can't find the drivers side switch so I'm going to have to get a replacement. Is there a way I can jumper the window bypassing the switch to get it rolled down. I know I could figure it out but I just figured easier if someone knows which wires get jumpered.
Thanks
BTW I don't know what caused the problem in the first place. But they work now so I won't look the gift horse in the mouth.
So they don't work!!! Well at least the drivers side with the new switch is not working. I am going to check the wiring again but I know that I had power to the blue and white or black wire. Any ideas?
I had the motor working a few weeks ago by jumpering it.
The one thing I did notice is that when I operate the passenger window switch (at least) from the drivers side the oil pressure gauge surges a little.
Special thanks to Greystreak seeing as hes basically helped me fix my truck so far.
