Tranny, transfer case leak?
Help: I have a 1999 superduty Diesel w/ auto transmission. It has 135000 miles but got a new transmission at 89000 after leaking out all fluid and burning up. Last week I was pulling a light trailer and started up a rocky trail. As I entered the trail I shifted to 4X4 high. It was not a hard pull and I did not hit anything but before I had gone 300 yds I had dumped 12 of my 17 qts of tranny fluid on the ground. It started Leaking exactly when I switched to 4X4. I stopped when the transmission started to slip and after figuring out what happened I refilled with 12 qts, shifted out of 4X4 and proceeded. I have since driven 2000 more miles in two wheel drive only and not lost a drop of tranny fluid. Whats going on? Is it the tranny or the transfer case or a broken line between the two. Can anyone shed some light on this mystery and am I ok to go for a while before I seek a fix?
