I am dealing with the same problem right now with my 77 460, as noted in another posting. But, I definitely have some rattling at idle (lifters?). I have good spark, no vacuum leaks, good compression and wicked good oil pressure (read by an aftermarket gauge). Does it have a distinctive tapping sound at idle? How does it run at, say, 45 mph?
Jay
Well, at idle there is a faint tapping sound. At around 2000-3100 there's a rattle like a lifter. This engine has about 9000miles on it since a complete rebuild, and it did this once before, so I took the heads off another engine and had them gone through and put them on like 1000 miles ago and it ran great. Then the other day i noticed it seemed to be a bit doggy so i backed off of it, and it seemed to be running fine. But when I got back on the gas it popped through the carb and started missing on 6 and 8. Now when its running if you go back to the exhaust pipe on that side it's really gassy, like the exhaust valves are open. But if they were open how would i have 140 compression, while cranking. I dunno it jus frustrates me sooo much. Could the lifters have too much oil pressure or sticking, causeing the valve to be pushed open while running. Which brings me back to why did it do this before and jus by switching heads it fixed it. I dunno i jus need answers, its my daily driver, so i kinda need it. Someone get back to me, Thanks
I had the gassy problem on my '75 460, basically all the symptoms you are haveing.
Mine has a 750 cfm holley 4 barrell on it, I had to put a new power valve in and readjust the idle mixture. This solved all the problems it hasn't ran better.
do a chicken wire test with it running pull plug wires one at a time listen for an rpm drop it should be the same for each cylinder thye sray around the intake manifold with some wd40 or carb spay listen for changes in rpm check the carb settings ,timming , if all that is ok do a compression test
