For those of you who have done the custom Y pipe swap, what was the pipe material your shop used for the Y pipe you had fabbed? Shops I have spoken to indicate they would be using 14 gauge aluminized pipe for a Y pipe for me. How will this type of material hold up to the temps associated with the exhaust at the collecter location?
DansV10,
Aluminized pipes are just fine. Have used several. I made my own from mandrel formed individual pieces. I got my Y transition from www.drgas.com.

Aluminized pipe will work just fine. Here is a picture of mine, I used the Flowmaster y-collector which makes for a nice neat exhaust.
I had a great opportunity to get a custom Y made up this weekend and I love it! It has made a difference in how the truck accelerates and how the engine seems to work "easier".
The O2 sensors are still in place. The mechanic cut one tube off several inches below the pipe and welded a new piece on so there was no messing with the O2 sensor on that side at all. On the other side he installed a new pipe with a brand new sensor bung and threaded the sensor right in.
His words, "Piece of cake."
Can he make another one? You bet he will. PM me and I will give you his contact info.
Dan, I don't have the 'priviledge' of emailing other members yet so if you could drop me a line or whatever I'd be interested in that set up your guy did as well.
thanks

I found a shop that is going to change my Y pipe. But here is the story. Every shop I went to had never done one. At first everyone of them tried to talk me out of it. Stating that it was not necessary. Then I told them to get under it and take a look. They would come out and say I can do it for X number of dollars. Everyone tried to sell me a muffler, but I had already done that. The guy that is going to do it actually has a pre-fab y connector and was confident that it would make some difference after he looked at it anyway. I will keep you posted as to how it goes.
Well I got the pipe changed today. I can say that it sounds much different. It is deeper at idle but when the rpms come up in neutral you can hear it breath, sounds like under you feet. I don't k know if it is just more air hitting the converter or exactly what it is. I will let you know. As far as performance I have not had time to really tell but it feels like between 1500-2500 a little better response. Will keep you updated.
I guess someone will have to define the "flutter". Before I had just the FM40 and at about just off idle and a little more it had this deafing rumble. I mean could not hardly hear the radio and things like that. Once you got throught that spot where either it would shift or you could come off the trottle to a different point it was ok. Now the more you get on it the more is sounds like those annoying hot rice burners when they go by you. That is from inside I don't know what it sounds like outside but I bet it is very close to the same.
With all that said I don't know but I would guess if it did not have it beore it does not. Very Annoying sound.
