i surrender
I do love this place !
After enough time driving my newer 1985 F-250 duelly diesel, extended cab, 3 speed, solid black with the chrome wheel inserts, I am ready to sell it.
Just tell me where to list and or how, and i will try to replace it with the right truck. ie an early gas powered f-250 or bigger duelly 4 speed 4x4.
too much smoke, not enough milage, and high rpms. it starts right up then dies for a spell, yesterday as it was stalling out i hit the pedal, and it seemed mad at me as the glow didnt come back on for a long time. usually i can get started after the glow is finished the second time around. I have adjusted the allen screw in the pump counterclockwise alot and it has noticable differences in smoke and power after it gets hot. i do however, pull right out after a short warm up and it smokes like crazy until it gets hotter. i will miss that feeling of power as i smoke out the people waiting for the bus at the bus stop....
BTW i am not saving money at the pump as prices have gone sky high. i would think for the money, i could at least smoke the tires if i had a gasser.
Who else is crazy enough to buy a truck like this ?
probably someone who doesn't overfuel their diesel, and than complain about fuel costs.
I hope you actually had a way to check the egt's otherwise I do not know who would want to buy that truck.
if smoking tires and blowing smoke are your goals, I don't know what to tell you....
dp
I dont know what you guys are talking about over fueling and what an egt is.. I was turning a hex screw counterclockwise in small increments each time to see a difference in smoke. i have turned this screw as far out as it seems to go and i get way less smoke after it heats up, and way less power. I cant say which is cleaner or cheaper to run, but i can say i probly dont know enough about diesel to troubleshooting. also, my diesel, doesnt have a 3 inch exhaust or a turbo boost.
You guys are all i have as nobody i know has any real diesel knowledge
but i dont know all the acronyms in use here half the time.
i dont know where to post my truck either it seems.
i will continue to be an early ford truck fan, i am just not yet sure diesel is better.
so if you dont know what to tell me, dont post, but if you think you can help a person like me understand some basic diesel troubleshooting, lets go !
unfriendly i am not. ie just because i never changed a glowplug doesnt mean your allowed to give up on me does it ? i plan to turn the fuel back up some and then check into the glow. the glow lite is not coming on as often as it used to, did i break it ? i am gonna need help troubleshooting the glow system. are there actually 8 of them ?
BTW i still look for the exact shop book i need. 6.9 international right ?
If it’s stock, an ’85 should have the 6.9.
i need a book for this. and a temperature gun.
You are turning the fuel down when you turn it counterclockwise. You will not have a heat issue in that direction, but it will suffer in the power area considerably. The same results could have been obtained by using lighter throttle application when it was at stock settings.
You can reap some fuel mileage by doing the exhaust upgrade and intake upgrade tricks that people like me use for more power. You just have to have a very smooth and light foot at lower speeds to increase the mileage way over what I will ever see.
I have a higher value on my time than I do on my fuel mileage, so I use every mod I do to decrease my driving time at the expense of my miles per gallon.
If you did a turbo with a 3" exhaust and reworked the intake for better flow, you could probably see a large improvement in your MPG as long as you drove it exactly like you do now.
A very common post here is more power and more MPG.
You can not have both together, you can have more power, you can have more MPG.
But if you use the more power, you loose MPG.
The ideal diesel setting for MPG will never have any black smoke at all.
If you see black smoke let off the throttle till it goes away, black smoke is unburnt fuel.
Do everything you can to increase the amount of air that can get in and out of the engine, diesel motors can not have to much airflow.
The most common service manual you can get easily is Haynes Diesel Engine Repair Manual #10330 that covers the Ford 6.9, 7.3, 7.3 turbo, 7.3 Power Stroke and GM diesels. It is not a great book, but it is better than none at all.
A pyrometer is what is used to measure exhaust gas temperature. It has a probe that is mounted in the exhaust manifold to measure exhaust temperatures. This guage can also moniter your fuel economy if you choose to.
Instead of watching the max safe temp of 1250, you will want to drive so you keep the EGT down to 600 for temp. It is hard to drive in hilly areas and keep it down that low, you will have to lose speed on the hills and even when driving into the wind.
The boxy front end of your truck combined with the weight were not meant to be fuel savers. Remember back in 85 fuel was under a dollar a gallon in most places. In later years as fuel prices rose things like aerodynamic bodys and overdrive transmissions became common options or design factors.
The 250 was never offered in a dually, the extra tires you are dragging around are more weight, rolling friction and wind resistance than a normal 250 has. So in a way you are just like the rest of us in saying the truck is more like what I like the looks of and is more functional this way even if it does burn more fuel because of it.
When you rob Peter, you have to pay Paul.

none the less i could never grasp what mother said about when you she used to baby her rides to make them last longer...to me this meant " dont kick the tires, wait until you have a blow out at 60 before you decide to change them." i am a safe driver, and just want to get there and out asap.
now , my truck is beautiful to me because of the bread box shape. to me this means it doesnt care what it has to do to get there, itl keep pushing.
thats asuming i am the only one on the road. but these days i have to lift off and on alot. i know the theory of a heavy foot, ie fuel injection (for a gasser)means greater milage as long as you dont use the extra power that comes with, but even with my driving style i am not getting the result i should be from this old house. i have learned and confirmed a few thing from you guys here though. all is not lost ! the in and out tricks are good basics to consider as well the gearring weakness issue i also seem to have. but guess what else i discovered, ? my brakes are sticky ! this is no longer a mythe to me, they are indeed keeping me from coasting. sure i checked them, i found one side badly worn and replaced the shoes on that one side as i knew i would be back in there soon to fix this problem. aside from the excessive black smoke, i wondered if fuel was being wasted from a leak that causes a hard to start condition i am getting. remember..." itl start then stall for a spell. " this means its loosing pressure overnite. is this the fuel return lines calling ?
and whats it like to coast freely ? i will miss doing 85 in under a minute in my 83 pickup.
my new trucks top speed is only 71 but i do love the gurth it has. i just wish it could get there in under a minute stock. but maybe it will handle better with the brakes turned off. the rear brakes arent exactly glowing after a trip, but they seem overheated. and today i heard the slight grinding while inching up on a red light with the radio off. i am still either saving up for the in and out mods, or trying to sell and then find a replacment for this truck.
BTW will a K&M filter make this engine louder ?
my mother passed at 71, god bless her !

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Then my last motor went up in steam out the exhaust.
So I was tearing it apart when I was not working.
New motor arrived Friday afternoon, so since the rain from Katrina is here now, I guess I will be installing it tomorrow.
Yes a little bit for the K&N, do make sure you service it often. I am in so much dust that I threw mine away. The dust soaked up the oil so fast that I had to service the filter everyday to keep it working.
I have also noticed the Dana 60 front axle makes my truck roll much easier than it did with the IFS that was in there. Tires seem to be wearing much better also.
I forgot to say if you can weld a couple of extra doors behind the regular doors, I will be right there with cash in hand. I want an early 80 's body style crew cab 350 that is in good shape for a complete rebuild. I was trying to do the one I have, but I use it to much to get anything done to it.
Your hard start, fire, and quit is probably the check valve in the return line draining the filter of fuel unless you see fuel on the intake manifold around the injectors.
Which end are the brakes sticking on?
I always put never siese on the caliper grooves where the ride on the spindle tree on the front axle. That seemed to help with them sticking for me on that end.
The rear ones caused me problems when the cables to the wheels were going bad. I found that the cables from Ford last twice as long as the ones from anywhere else. And they were not much more than the off brand ones were.

i am going to get the book I promise you, but for now the money just aint coming in. and i dont know 6.9 Ford 420 CID from international somthing...
can you break down the glow system. i will look today to see how many glows i can find.
maybe there is a temp sensor thats gone bad as they wont come on as often as they did. she will start ,stall, then make me wait minutes before a glow lite will come on.
between fuel and the glow, i dont know what the hard start is all about. beings the glow lite is a newer problem, i am calling both. " Yeah I see your hand, and I am out ! "
I didnt get much hardship from Katrina at all, except for what i saw on the tv so far. i still havent heard any death toll numbers, so i guess it could have been worse. i just aint ready to drive down there and help.
