new wires,plugs"gaped",cap,rotor
I'm lost the recomended shop told me carb wrong $350 later runs worse
Strait6,
Does your vehicle miss all the time or just when its warmed up?
A random miss could be caused by many things:
1. Bad pickup stator in distributor.
2. Bad coil
3. Vacuum Leak
4. Bad plug wires or wires that run parallel jump spark.
A missing cylinder is usually not caused by a carb. When did this problem start? After a specific repair? After a rebuild? After an accident? Give me some details, please.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Sep-02 AT 03:44 PM (EST)]Ran hot from day I got it.
replaced the origional plugs, wires,cap,rotor
checked the whole colling system.had the chemical test on the head gasket.
no vacume leaks.
no jumping sparkran in 100% darkness saw nothing. in 3000 miles havent boiled it but border line "pings hot-diesles shut off" oil clean but shot in 1000
My concerns
no vacume to disp during idle?
wants to stall from stop in 1st have to "feather the gas or rev@slip"
timing mark wanders under light.
I switched the carb does this affect timeing.
Only gets hot on the highway or over 60mph
misses when cold, hot, warm, day, night, timing 3-14 degres doesnt matter it misses and has even before said repairs in fact the repairs "amplified" the probs.
It has 86,000 one elderly owner miles and is other than paint perfect.
But I am going to blow it up the wife smashed the car and the cheroke lost its third member now the "project truck" is doing 150-200 miles a day and I'm lost as to the hot-running problem.
I'm about ready to sell it before I destroy a nice truck.Use the money to fix the others<sobbing>
How close is you're fan to the rad.? They make fan spacers to get the fan closer.
I've got a 77 F-100 w\302 and just bought a new 4 core radiator(stock was a 3 core). The radiator is bigger but there are bolts holes for it (I guess the big blocks com w\the 4 cores).
Anyway this did wonders for the operating temp! Sitting still for 30 min. on a 92deg. day it stays between 170 - 190 deg. My '95 Dodge Ram never runs under 205!
Put your plug wires on loose, just enough to make contact with the plugs. Lift them one at a time to see if the engine slows down. If one cylinder does not, that one is the problem. I have seen one new plug that was bad. Do a compression test and check the timing chain for slop. Take a good look at the distributor plate for wear that might cause the timing to vary.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Sep-02 AT 11:44 PM (EST)]This motor should have NO problem cooling the truck
3rd late 70s 6 stick truck I've owned.
the last had 1/3 of its cores sodered off pull 5000lbs from LA to minniapolis in aug!
The timeing is GEARED and low miles.
Distibutor plate ?
truck has power
smokes em good with no clutch dump.
Have and uninstaled

1 ton granny 4 spd
3/4 ton springs
Goal
to pull a 1979 coachman Quinstar "the flagship model" 10,000lb 31'fifth

Have the 79 coachman pamphlet with my camper pulled buy a my 79 ford
on the cover <recreating the 70s camping experiance>
I'm going to do the water pump in the am.
Could I modify the fan blades more push?
New radiator? mine looks mint out little crud inside.
I still think the miss is the hot prob.
How do I check the coil?
the disp assy?
Ignition mod?
Maybe carb mix lean"preset" gets good mpg
If I had the extra hondo this week I'd send it to ford to figure it out.
I would check in the dist. The plate moves back and forth, and the wiring inside the dist is made special so it will flex, but it still could be broken internally. The easiest way to try this is throw money at it and buy a rebuilt dist. Or else, take the guts out and take each individual wire between your fingers, and pull down the length of the wire to see if it's broken internally. Also check all the connections in the plugs going tothe coil and dist. The engine shaking back and forth could be pulling on them. Also, if the older carb worked better, put it back on.
Strait,
This sounds like the cam is advanced. Is it possible the timing gears are off a notch. If they were, you would have good torque and weak top end and the vehicle would run hot. Take a compression check and see what you got. The only way to check is to pull the timing cover and check the marks. This would explain the pinging also. i had a similiar sitiuation almost ten years ago. It cost me a bit of money because i lost the head gasket before I figured it out.
