I have and 86 F-150 with a EFI 5.0 I put headers on it in Febuary and disconnected some of the worthless emissions stuff on the passenger side. I now hear a clicking niose from passenger side when I'm driving my pickup. When I talked to the local mechanic he said it sounded like it was an emission pipe that runs from one head to the other and that it has rotted away and that is what I'm hearing. I had a freind who drove a chevy and had a valve go bad ( dang chevys anyway) and it was makeing the same sound. I just wonder what you guys think it is a bad valve or just the emission pipe. Thanks for all the help
The rotted emissions pipe is probably more likely.
Check the air pipe from the pump to the header pipe.
Also check the EGR piping that goes from the EGR Valve to the back of the heads.
Mine just broke a few weeks ago when I went to clean the EGR and replace the gasket. That pipe was made to flex and absorb vibration but becomes brittle with age. Mine broke clean off even though I was very gentle moving and flexing the EGR end of the pipe.
The noise you are hearing is exhaust and normal internal valve noise.
there is a diverter valve on the back of the heads that fails over time. you will need to remove the upper intake to get to it but you can still feel it if you stick your hand back there. with the motor off of course
