Question is this normal ?

well i fixed my locking hub on my 84 f-150 dana 44. now i noticed somthing that i have no idea about.

was under truck looking at my front axle and noticed that my outer axle's have some play where they enter the spindle. thought i had bad U joint but it's not the U joint. i can hold on to the outer axle and i can move it up,down, for, and aft. with the hub is in FREE . LOCK the hub and allmost all the play is gone. this normal or do i have a problem?
thanks .....Les

A little bit of movement is normal. if it's much more than about 1/16"-3/32" up/down and front/back there's a good chance the bearing inside your spindle that supports the stub axle is shot. It's not the most important bearing and it isn't super urgent to fix, but it does put added stress on the u-joints when four wheel drive is engaged.

I tend to disagree.

if the spindle bearing isn't fixed, it will break the hub right where the inner piece meets the outer piece of the hub.

it doesn't bother the ujoint, but it _will_ take out the hub again if it isn't fixed.

Not only that, but, if it's gone, it can put a nice groove where the raised area the bearing used to ride on used to be... Been there, fixed that... Told the owner to think about taking it out of 4wd and unlocking the hubs now and then...

bad spindle bearings tend to wear out the axle stub shafts, and also take out he seals allowing water and mud into the hub area which can lead to bearing failure etc. It's not a big deal of you don't use 4wd much and leave the hubs unlocked most of hte time but I would change it as soon as I found it.
But heck most people never even pull the spindle to regrease those when they do the wheel bearings, I just personally don't like bad bearings anywhere on my truck

Bad bearing! BAAAAAADD BEARING!

You don't have to wait for something to break. Once that race turns on it's respective mounting surface, the part is pretty much un-useable. If the old race spun, the new one will also. A good shop won't guarentee the new bearings. Don't ask how I know.
