is there a fuse for the 4x4?? Mine hasn't worked for a while now, and I am starting the hunt to fix it.....just thought I would start with the easiest and work my way up.....that's why I am wondering if there is a fuse somewhere for the 4WD......Thanks
There is somwhere and somebody else will have to answer that for you.
On my 2001 X my 4WD let me down twice when i needed it. Both times it was a cracked vacuume hose @ the spindle (if you have the dash switch). Last weekend I replaced both hoses and used permatex ultra copper on the connections. I'll be having no more of that!
In all likelihood, it's not a fuse. When you use the switch on the dash, there are two separate actions that should happen. The first, is engaging the transfer case. This is accomplished with an electrical solenoid. You should feel or hear the transfer case engage, especially when switching to 4-wheel low. The second action is engaging the hubs. This is probably where your problem is. Using the dash switch will activate a vacuum switch on the inner fender behind the battery. The vacuum should engage the hubs. It is very common for the seal on the hubs to leak, or for the hubs to bind up because of dirt and dust. Occasionally, the vacuum line from the switch into each wheel will break or fall off the casting at the backing plate. Try to engage the hubs manually and then retest the 4x4. If the hubs are hard to turn, saturate them with WD40, that often helps.
We have (my wife's truck) a 01 4WD\65Kmi\V10 and have similar problem. 4WD will work by locking hubs but dash switch will not engage. Had it in 4WD recently, by dash switch, then disengaging did not work (4X4 Light) still on but it's in 2WD. Have tried a couple of things to get light out and 4WD working like it used to but no luck. Have read about vacuum leak fixes but I am by no means a mechanic but am mechanically inclined. So is this something that you recommend a mechanic or is it ok for a DIYer?
The light on the dash doesn't know if the hubs work or not. The light is controlled by the servo on the transfer case. It's a little motor that moves the linkage that gets moved with the lever on the manual ones. If the light is on it's either not shifting out of 4wd but releasing the hubs, or the switch for the light is having a problem.
