Cool 84-F150 302 2wd missing HELP!!!

Ok, I finally got this to come up. Distributer spark advance not moving. If i replace the advance will this straighten the timing back out, or am I gonna have to replace that too? I am gonna replace the whole distributer & Shaft. If I have too I'll replace the whole timing chain & all that, but do I have too? 162,000 miles on it.

There's a lot of troubleshooting to do. Advance is controlled by the computer or a module. If a solenoid or sensor is bad, the computer can't adjust things, so it defaults to a "limp home" mode with no advance. Don't replace expensive parts without first checking the entire system. A repair manual will give you a lot more info than can be handed out in a forum, but it's good to read some of the posts here too.

First you will want to check why the advance is not working. Pull the distributor cap off and manually move the arm that connects to the vacuum advance module. Does it move pretty freely? If so, the vacuum module is probably shot then go ahead and replace the vacuum advance module. Or you can test by placing a manual vacuum source on the vacuum advance module with the distributor cap off and see if it moves the pickup assembly (I have been known to pull the connection at the carburetor and suck on it to test) Only if the pickup assembly in the distributor is completely frozen, then you may have to look at repairing or replacing the distributor. This would be fairly rare. Once you have the vacuum advance working and the problem still exists, then you will need to check your timing. It should be right at 8 degrees btdc with the vacuum advance line removed and plugged. Afterward, be sure that the vacuum advance is connected to the vacuum port on the passenger side of the carburetor right below the choke housing.

If you have pulled out the distributor without marking the position of the rotor or rotated the engine at all while it was out, you may have to set the engine to top dead center on #1 piston by removing the spark plug and place your finger over the hole or feel with a small screwdriver for the piston to move all the way up to the top of the compression stroke. Once the engine is set to #1 TDC, you can reinstall the distributor with the rotor pointing directly at the #1 plug. This should allow you to start the motor and then set the timing to the 8 degrees BTDC.

If it is still rough at idle, check for spark at each plug. One at a time, pull a spark plug and leave the boot on. Start the motor and check for spark by holding the plug close to the engine block, intake or other metal engine part to see if there is a spark.

Hope this helps.
