Low range shifting problems
Hello all, I'm new to the forum, I just picked up my first Ford truck in about 20 years, a '99 F150 SC 4x4 5.4 with electronic shift and 45K miles. The 4 high worked fine but it would not shift into 4 Lo. No light and no sounds in dash. I had the dealer check the GEM, relays and shift motor. Dealer said relay and shift motor were bad so I had them replaced. This did not fix the problem. The dealer tells me they are sure it's an electrical problem, i.e. a short somewhere and won't commit to diagnosis time, anywhere from one to 20 hours to find the problem. Any thoughts on a solution that isn't going to cost me a small fortune? I felt confident upon buying the truck that this was going to be an easy fix, apparently not.

Ford390gashog. Thanks for the input. I should have been clearer above, when I referrred to relays being replaced I should have mentioned that they ran continuity checks etc. and have determined the dash switch is good. Apparently all components in the electrical control system are function testing ok but still it won't shift into 4 Lo. The 4 Hi is working fine but then it was when I first took it into the Ford shop??? They claim it is an "open wire" that needs to be traced. I don't want to spend $70/hr on a fishing expedition. First person with the right answer gets lunch on me at 7-11.
