I searched the tranny forum and did not find what I'm looking for so I figure I'll try here. I have a feeling my tranny is on it's way out. I have a '92 XLT w/ 302 engine, the tranny gasket leaked really badly back in May so I had the filter and gasket done. When the pan was dropped, an awful smell coming from the fluid that looked like mud, literally. Lately it just doesn't seem to be shifting properly, etc...etc.. I know from the other posts that the upgrades to the E40D were done to later models, will these later model trannies fit my '92 if I can find one? As an example, I found one online local to me out of a '94 E250 van. Would this fit? Or could I get one from a bone yard possibly that would fit from '94-'95. Finally, is there another auto trannie I can replace the E40D with, obviously with a minimum amount of trouble, possibly C6? Any help would be appreciated, I'd like to know my options before I go ahead and decide what to do...
First of all don't trade the E40D out with a C6, you wont be happy with life and your gas milage will suck. The C6 is a shorter tranny, i think. So you would have to do drivetrain modification. The E40D is probably one of the best trannies that ford has.
How many miles does the truck have on it?
You might be able to save some money if you get it professionaly flushed out. There are two things on vehicles that people neglect a lot. Those are the cooling system, and automatic trannies.
If you do decide to get a new tranny, a 94-95 will fit. Just make sure it comes off of a smallblock, and not a 460, or a diesel.
Thanks, I was just curious as to swapping with something else. The truck has close to 150,000 on it, I bought it in February and when I had the gasket and filter done I'm pretty sure that it had never been done before. It looked like swamp water coming out, with what I'm assuming was thick clumps of clutch material or something along those lines. I will look into a flush though. The later model trans from a small block would include a 351 I am assuming. Thanks...Al
Pull your dipstick out and see what the trans fluid smells like, if it smells burnt you got problems and a flush wont help you at all. If it doesnt drop the pan and see if there are metal flakes in it, if so it needs a rebuild, if not add a trans cooler and remote filter and see if that helps it. I was having some probs with mine, but i did the trans cooler and it runs fine now. I am going to install a remote trans filter soon too.
