I dont have a spare, i got plenty of space for a bigger tank, a bronco tank is the cheepest for me since i am junking my bonco and the tank is less than a year old, i guess the easy way to mod the fuel pickup is just to cut it and put in a of pipe with some compresson copplings
I'm looking at doing the same thing. Aftermarket 32 gallon Bronco tanks are available on ebay for $65 - $85. My 85 F250 uses the large (3.5") opening and the vent pipe is in the fuel filler pipe. It looks like the late 80's FI gasser tanks will have the same size opening.
They also have a smaller hole in the very top of the tank, behind the sending unit. Not sure if my diesel tank has this feature, since I haven't pulled it yet. I'll also need to check about purchasing different tank straps.
Dave do you have a skid plate under your rear tank?
If you do you just use longer bolts to hold the skid plate up, there are no tank straps under the rear tank. The smaller hole has a grommet in it for the tank breather vent line.
i have a good tank from a 90 F150 long box gasser. I take it this should fit in my 89 long box diesel ? That would be wonderful, since the rear tank has more rust that the rest of the truck (which is bad). I dont even want to see if it holds fuel, it just looks that bad. I think I can push my hand through the top.......
Dave - No skid plate under the tank, just two straps that stretch from a cross member in front of the tank to a cross member behind the tank. I guess the larger Bronco tank will take different straps, since the dimensions are different. I was afraid that hole was for a vent thingie. My tank supposedly has the vent pipe built in to the fill tube. Thanks for the info - gotta think on that.
On my 86, I have an additional vent hose. I accidentally pinched it, and it made filling next to impossible. After I found the hose and got it clear, no mor filling problem, so that extra vent hose is still needed for that.
There is a vent in the tank that lets the fuel be drawn out. The caps are sealed so no air can enter the tank or fuel can spill out when you are on a steep hill. The vent has a little ball that seals the tank in the event you roll the truck over, but lets air enter as you use the fuel out.
The vent tube inside the fill tube is supposed to make it easier to fill the tank, I took mine out and it fills better than it did when it was installed. Lots less fuel spitting back out after it is within 5 gallons of full.
Do your straps mount with bolts? If so you can just use longer bolts with the same straps.
Funny - mine spits back, too. I figure I'm almost full, then *bloop* about a cup or so of fuel comes gushing up out of the filler. Great use of resources. I like the idea of longer bolts. Simple, strong and easy! This Bronco tank idea is looking better all the time. Not as much capacity as I'd like, but I can buy it and have it shipped to the house for about $100. That won't even come close to buying one of the aftermarket tanks.
i thought that the gasser tanks are made from a different material than the diesel's. i have heard that the gasser tanks will cause problems with the IP or the injectors (can't remeber whichone)
