Installing a '67 stepside bed on a '65

Hello I am a new member. Recently I purchased a '65 F-100 long bed truck in decent condition. The apple does not fall from from the tree and in no time my son had pulled the motor, detailed the motor and motor bay, installed a new clutch, etc. Currently he has the bed off the truck and we are considering installing a stepside bed from a '67 which is at one of the local boneyards. I have not compared the mounting bolts from each truck. Do you think this might work?

If the stepside is a long bed, it should.

You need to be careful, both trucks need to be same, both 2x4 or 4x4. You can't take a 4x4 stepside bed and put it on a 2x4.

Thanks for the good news. Both beds are long beds and both beds are from 4x2 trucks. I was concerned about the body style change making the swap a little more complicated. Now I just hope the boneyard lets go of the '67 stepside bed at a reasonable cost...

I measured both beds today and have a slight problem. The side to side measurements are identical, however the measurement from the bolt holes closest to the cab to the next set of bolts (middle) are 2 " longer on the stepside. Fact is the '67 frame even has holes exactly where the '65 bed holes are suppose to be. The dimension between the middle holes and the rear bed mounting holes are exacly the same at 27-1/2". It appears the '67 cab does not extend back quite as far as the '65 style cab, therefore the bed is just a couple inches longer. Regardless I think I am going to buy the '67 stepside bed and install anyway. I think I will just mount the bed using the front mounting locations on the '65 and the '67 bed. Then I will have to drill new holes for the middle and rear mounting locations on the '65 frame. I do not think having the wheel well 2 inches further back will create problem except it might look strange. If it looks to strange I guess I might have to shorten the front part of the bed by approximately two inches. My ultimate plan is to then install due exhaust stacks. I think it will look pretty cool and be a nice driver for my son at OK State U. Any opinions good or bad?

I think the wheelbase is longer on a '67 than a '65 longbox.. this might explain some of the things you observed. I think the '65 is 129" and the '67 is 131" WB if I remember correctly. The long box stepside box is the same length for both years, in fact It's the same for a LOT of years both previous and after your truck, but the fenders might be slighty moved back on the box to make up the difference in wheelbase.

RF the 2" longer wheel base seems to explain my measurement differences, but after more investigation I see where my '65 has the extra pair of mounting holes two inches closer to the cab. The bed is off my '65 so I think I will just go to the boneyard tomorrow, unbolt it from the '67 (probably easier said than done), and test fit it on my truck. I think it will work and will look good. When completed can I post a picture? I am not sure how...
