Transmission Clunk

Hi, does anyone know what could be wrong with my transmission? 2000 Ranger 3.0 4x4 XLT. When switching from PARK to REVERSE or DRIVE, it sounds (and feels) like the transmission is slamming into gear. Also, when taking off from a stop, it slams into gear very hard. It also does this while descelerating to a stop. This has been going on for 10,000 miles, not getting any worse and definately not getting any better. I've had multiple shops try and figure it out, although they never tore into the transmission. I've replaced the ball joints and inspected the rear end and everything looks great. I guess the only other thing that could be wrong is the tranny? Anyone else ever have this problem?

I'm not sure what your problem is, but my wife's 2001 Taurus with the 3.0 and auto trans behaves similar to what you describe. It is especially noticeable when you shift into drive.

Is your truck an extended cab? The clunking taking off or coming to a stop could be the slip yoke in the rear driveshaft. Ford has a TSB out for the problem (TSB #03-26-2). If you crawl underneath and look at the rear driveshaft, you'll see a rubber boot towards the front of it. That's the slip yoke.

Evidently, Spicer (who makes the driveshaft for Ford) doesn't believe in using grease in this yoke. When the truck goes to take off, the splines bind momentarily as power is applied, then "snap back", causing a jolt in the driveline. To fix this, the driveshaft has to be pulled out. Then cut the clamps off the boot and pull it apart (remember to mark the driveshaft so it's aligned properly when it's put back together!!) Grease those splines real good, slide it back together, and put new clamps on the boot. Then bolt the shaft back in.

This is a common problem. My 2002 is doing the same thing. I ordered the clamps this week from the dealer, and this is on my to-do list for this weekend. In fact, this is the second Ranger I've had to do this with. Hopefully this helps.
