I have a line on a set of 285/75r16 tires to put onto my 98 5.4 4x4 expy. It came with the 255/70r16 standard. I know the bigger tires will fit into the wheelwells quite nicely , but my question is this.
1. Do I need to uprgrade my spare tire to the same size? Or will a few miles with the stock size do grave damage to anything. I would think with an open front differential that as long as I don't use 4x4 then the different sizes would harm no more than my image riding down the road for a few miles. But on the rear limited slip setup, I am more concerned that the size differential may hurt the diff.
2. Will a 285/75r16 tire fit up under in the standard spare area? There appears to be ample room from what I can tell, and the extra width of the tire will be more than made up for in the incresed overall ride height of the truck anyway. Not that this truck see's more than the very occasional rough trail to the fishing hole.
Don't forget that the Expy was offered with a 265/70-17 tire as an option. I would compare the dimensions of a 285/75-16 with a 265/70-17. Willing to bet that they're close in size. If so, it should fit in the spare tire area.
