1985 351W Timing Marks?

Ive recently purchased a 1985 351w and I need to set my timing because of a poor running condition at idle. My problem is I can't find the timing marks on the thing. I cleaned off a pointed metal tab that sits close over my harmonic balancer but there are no visible timing marks on it. Is this even the right spot to be looking? When I hook up my timing light I can see a white mark on the harmonic balancer but it doesnt seem to line up with anything. Anyone know what I should do or what I should be looking for? Thanks

This is a drawing of what I have been looking at:

the timing marks are on the harmonic balancer as far as I know - should be stamped on there so after a good clean try wiping some paint over it then wip eit off to leave the depressions left from the stamp visible... if that makes any sense....

yes, the mark on the balancer to the point. remember to disconnect your vacum advance and plug it on the dizzy before you start timing the motor. i suggest you buy a haynes manual to also help in the process

Just use some white chalk and rub it on the harmonic balancer. You might have to crank the engine a few times so it comes around to the point you can see the timing marks. Mine were invisible till i did this. Just keep rubbing white chalk (like from school)
