Lately my truck has been starting like crap. Ive replaced all the glow plugs and checked the harness. They cycle for 6 seconds which is plenty of time for this weather.
When I start it up I notice the high idle no longer comes on like it used to and the timing advance isnt working because it runs smooth when the motor finally starts. The plug on the sensor by the thermostat is all the way on and the connector is on the ip but it still dont work.
Any tips on common problems with the wiring on this system would be appreciated.
Could the sensor be bad by the thermostat housing?
Check the engine temp switch connector see if one side has 12v power, then check the temp switch electrical pins (cold) for continuity. Check all wiring........
where is the "switch connector"? is it the plug that hooks to the switch? I know the wiring is fine because I temporarily bypassed it and it worked.
With the motor cold and the switch bypassed it still started hard. The glow plugs cycled for a long time and I floored it but it still cranked for 5 seconds or so before it started.
Engine temp switch...."connector" is what you jumpered.
Are you starting as per the book ........turn on key, press fuel pedal to floor/release.. wait for WTS light to go out, now turn key for start while pressing fuel pedal 1/2 way, release the pedal after start. If it still requires more than 3 revolutions of the engine then you either have air in the fuel system or a weak starter possibly.
If glow plugs cycled for a long time there might be a glow plug relay (controler) problem. Check to see if you have power to glow plugs from harness. As stated above also could be air leaking into fuel system thru minor cracks in fuel return lines or bad gasket on fuel filter.
i jump in er and cycle the plugs and floor it while cranking until it starts. I hooked the switch back up and cycled the plugs twice this morning and it fired right off like a cummins.
